What’s your opinion on the burning of your nations flag… I heard somewhere that it was being made illegal in Australia.
My opinion: Who cares?, burn away.

Yep, burn away.
Again goverments are looking to stop the surface of the problem but making it illigal. Instead of looking why people are burining flags in the firstplace.
Ditto. I’m a firm believer in the freedom of speech including such social activism as flag burning.
that being said, I think that flag burning is in poor taste, and that there are infinitely better ways of getting one’s message across.
Yeah, but the news jumps on flag burinings story like poop on velcro, so it does work.
true.
but it wouldn’t be the first time that the media, in the guise of doing “public service” ended up causing more harm than good.
though I guess that’s getting a little too deep into the issue.
I think that we’re pretty much in agreement that flag burning sucks.
anyone disagree? anyone?
flag burning is just like burning anything else. Lately Iranians in france immolated themselves, I would have rather seen the french flag burn than the poor fellows, just to be heard…
It’s wrong. Your disagreement with a certain government official or policy should not be carried out in an action that disrespect’s your nation’s entire history. Certain things inherent to each nation stand for the lives and struggles of people that helped that nation become what it is and what it will be.
Burning a flag; throws all of that away. In an American’s case, it throws away almost 250 years worth of accomplishment; just because that person disagrees with one or more policies.
If you have a problem, you have a right to protest; but how can a form of protesting that disrepects other’s and makes their lives and sacrifices worthless possibly communicate any form of a respectable message.
If you disagree that’s cool, but disagree in a manner that is peaceful and doesn’t involve a mild-mannered hate crime. Yes, to me, flag burning is a mild hate crime. It’s a violent destructive act against a people.
Just my two cents. If you disagree I’m cool with it; just don’t burn the forums…
=)
I won’t. I like fire.
I think its a mean of expression which is I agree, a bit more violent than others.
But some people are over-patriotic and consider their flag like god-like objects. To me a simple fabric symbol.
I know in the US flags are much more considered than over here in europ; a majority of US homes do have a flag near their front door, every school has one, and the pledge must be made towards the flag.
My point of view is to consider them as they are. Pieces of fabric with colors on them. Im not gonna go nuts if someone burns 'em, but will enquire why…
And, although my pyrotechniques are up to date I won’t burn the forums. Spamming will be enough for me =)

That is unfortuante MLK.
My Opinion:
Dont torch my flag in front of me unless you want to loose a couple teeth.
I take my flag and my country very seriously.
that’s what im saying. I don’t. Mine would have to be way better to be proud of it. Plus my flag looks dumb, I agree the american one is a bit more complicated.
I’wont burn anybody’s flag, I do understand the effects it has…
This is directed at Fester and Prstudio or someone who is against flag buring.
If you had the power would you make flag burining illigal?
EDIT: Just read your question again :sure:
No, I would not make it illegal. Unless the actual act of flag burning leads to a largescale criminal/violent offense, there is no real point to banning it. As much as I would like to, legally it simply wouldn’t happen.
(Highlight the following text to see what I originally wrote before reading the question again)
I’m not supporter of flag burning, but the Supreme Court will not strike it down in its current form. While cross burning, for the large part, is restricted, flag burning isn’t because it is not seen as a form of intimidation. 1st Amendment rights can only be curtailed (usually) when whatever a person does is an act of intimidation - which flag burning for the most part really isn’t. It’s just a ridiculous way of making a political statement…similar to lying down in a busy street
So you , would like that… I mean… thats why I said, if you had the power.
Ai…scary thought…If I had the power…still no. There are some good reasons why it is still allowed, and it would be too selfish of me to say yes
in response to your first post:
i think that burning the flag in protest is wrong. there are better ways to protest as PR said. that way i sjust childish and wrong. on the otehre hand if it is in respect (eg it touched the ground) then i feel you should, becasue thats respectfull.
inresponse to the second quetion:
i would not make flag burning illegal because you do have a right to do what you feel is moraly correct. but as kirupa said, if it leads to riot then it should be stoped and illegal, so there are really mixed feelings for me on this one
I forget who said this, and I forget the exact words, but I this is what I believe in.
“I agree with your right to burn a flag. But you should agree with my right to kick your arse for burning the symbol my family members have died defending.”
Interesting replies… thanks
Well, the thing I see people right away got wrong…
It dosent say the American Flag, its says Flag Burning…
We apply this to extreme cases like when people where burning
Lets say the Palestenians burn the Israel Flag, they want to show that they dont like what the flag stands for.
Let me give you an example… The Flag stands for the Country…
But lets go to the American Flag… Lets say the US goverment becomes an oppresive ruler, taking away citezens freedoms off all kinds and all the evil things…
Now, that flag dosent stand anymore what your ancestors fought for, now it is only a cloth. And because you ( I assume) stand against this opressive goverment, and they stand against you , you might want to burn it as a sign of protest…
But I also understand countries like, lets say Iran, burns the Amercan flag. Because USA stands against them, and the Dont like what you stand for… or the country or what your ancestors fought for.
Lets turn back to 10.11.01
One mounth after the Terrorist Attacks, I beleive we knew the terrorist camps where in Afganistan… but anyway… before we invaded and everything… would it be alright for Americans to Burn Afganistan Flags?
No Russian. The American Flag stands for democracy and justice and all that good stuff. No matter what the U.S. government does, that flag always stands for the same things, and thousands of americans have given their lives for the ideals that flag represents.
If an “oppresive ruler” takes control of the country, then burn a picture of him, or burn a flag that has the picture of the white house, but there is no reason for you to burn a symbol of freedom.
I do disagree with people in Iran burning the flag, it shows they have no respect for people. I would never burn a French flag, because I know that many people gave their lives defending that flag. But I just get extremely angry when I see people living in America and benefiting from the deaths of US soldiers, and then spitting on their graves by burning the flag.
So in conclusion, if you don’t like the country, burn a sign that says “I hate the US” or “I hate Bush” or whatever you want, just don’t burn a flag.
Agree naly,
Good point, about the amercian flag…
but what of the last question… ?
