Flag burning

What question am I skirting rev?

how about this BL?

stop trying to change the subject:

*for the foruth time
*Given that flag burning is a show of disrespect, and that it is impossible to litigate respect, why should flag burning be illegal?

I don’t think it is impossible to litigate respect…we both agreed we do it every day with public decency laws. I take it one step further myself and say all laws are based on respect. The respect of anothers life not to kill them, a respect of others property not to steal it, etc. So, you see Rev, my answer to the question is because we owe it to the fallen. I have said this over and over and over.

vulcan:

our (American) laws are not morally based. They are based on the safety of society. If morals happen to agree with that law, cool. When morals try to be litigated, they fail, just look at prohibition.

Too many people can not separate morals and religion (not saying that you can’t).

Bull crap!

the law to prevent stealing, is to keep your crap to yourself, and those you authorize access to your crap.

It is wrong to kill someone, not out of respect of them, but because you are taking someone else’s life.

Give me a break.

Prostitution must be illegal, because it is disrepectful to women.

Ok, I hate to get us off on another tangent, but I think we need to go this way. Why is taking someone’s life wrong?

Hey, we are in the wrong thread vulcan… lets move this stuff to the Michael Moore thread.

Perhaps I fail to see the difference……. You have a law that you must stop at a red light…. Why ? yes it makes it safer for others… But if people didn’t stop there would be a lot of people hurt and killed… I think society has a moral objection to this and so we have our laws…
Personally I don’t see religion having anything to do with societies morals in general… Even if it does preach some.

Hey guys, I am going to create us a new thread to talk about morals and laws and all this…

Is that not “litigating” respect?

I use quotes because there is a lot of incorrect usage of this word. I suggest the users of the word look it up in a dictionary.

I don’t think prostitution is disrespectful to women.
If they want to screw you for a buck it’s their choice.
Raping women is disrespectful.
