Since there is a “Random” forum, could there be an “Ordered” forum? I was thinking that in it, people can discuss actual topics like politics, religion, and science instead of unchalant ones. There, people can discuss their problems should they have any, and i don’t know, post anything that doesn’t constitute as spam. I know should this happen, it won’t be as populated as Random, but it would rather be a place of calm, a place where you could actually talk about something instead of telling people to stop spamming.
If this forum does form, I will be responsible for all the stuff that goes on in it, filtering out any spam that may accumulate.
Hey Thor - sure! If you are willing to undertake the responsibility of reducing spam and ensuring there are no “let’s kill off X group of people” or I hate “x people”, sure =)
Well, Random is more of something that does not involve politics/religion/etc. - a more moderate area of the site where just regular stuff is discussed. Ordered will be a place where actual, important, tough issues such as religion, politics, etc. will be discussed. Ordered will be less cordial, less humory, but it will be more informative and provide analysis, criticisms, etc. - not for the fant of heart
Wow Phil - relax, like I have PMed you about 2 mins ago, I’m sure Thor won’t be the only mod there - you are free to help out as well. No mod here is “officially” a mod for any forum, but he/she may take a more avid interest in one particular area of the forum.
Here’s my take on this:
Spam
Ordered will be less prone to spam with the members more heavily controlled. This will be more of a college-level Political Science discussion instead of a random discussion, etc.
Relgion/Poltics
Instead of the single thread designed to dissuade anyone from discussing Religion and Politics in Random, members are free to constructively discuss such topics in the Ordered forum. Basically, if you are interested in a more serene, friendly conversation - Random is the place for you.
If you don’t mind having your feathers ruffled, reality twisted, and your beliefs questioned, upheld, and guilloteened, Ordered is the place for you =)
I think this is a brilliant idea because this will help curtail the spam - ensure there is a location for deep, intellectual discussion. While ordered will discuss more serious issues, the general conversation will still be as friendly as the rest of the site.
EDIT: More than likely, post counts will also be enabled for both the forums - this is, imo, a brilliant solution that we have been waiting for.
And as Kirupa said, there are no official mods of sections, just “technically official” mods of sections. Which means pretty much you spend the most time there and take interest in what goes on there specifically. And there doesn’t only have to be 1.
Since Thor is the one who proposed the idea, I think it was Kirupas intention to put the responsibility on Thor instead of imposing the responsibility on you not knowing if you wanted it or not. I can’t speak for Kirupa, but I got that impression at least. Simply because this new section will most likely have a TON of flame wars breaking out.
Think about it Phil… an entire section devoted to the deep subjects you love to talk about, and then another section for friendly conversation that you love so much too.
hey, phil i didn’t mean any harm. that’s why i’m simply proposing so i can see what you guys think. i mean, phil, it doesn’t have to go through if you feel like that. i just wanted to see what you guys thought of my idea. random is just a mess and it’s hard going through all the “I’m bored” or “???” or “this is freaking awesome!!!” threads in random and actually looking for a meaningful thread.
Thor, Phil, lost, and everyone else - the new forum is up. Don’t hesitate to set the rules on a sticky so everyone who accesses the area can be aware of the forum’s reason for being, etc.
Again, Phil - we are all equal as members in this forum. No one individual gets all the credit for the success of any forum - we all collectively played a part while a few may have a little bit more to do than that. Nobody doubts that you played a good role in the popularity of random!
The Ordered thread is partially a solution to the quagmire you feel you are in regarding the Random forum. This is a perfect place for religion/politics and other related material that you are interested in to discuss.
At least we can finally get rid of that ridiculous War and Politics thread and have some real discussions in Ordered =)
I’d like to have moderated debates.
something like one mod gets to be a ref. He’s not allowed to comment on the opinions or make his own… just keep things on track and civil. Then two to four people could spar out a subject line, using a standard sort of debate style.
one person states his side, the defender states his side, offender gets first rebuttle in a string, ending with defender getting final rebuttle. Or something like that. The mods job doesn’t really get tough until four people are in it.
David - sure; it’ll be just like a battle in the Battle section. Go for it - I’m sure we can have like a “debate of the week”. A topic of a mods’ choice can be made a sticky, and anybody interested can sign-up for it. And only they will be allowed to comment on it - similar to a more organized forum.
