My schools new website

I had to do a multimedia project for my IT class, and i decided to re-build the schools website http://www.hsc.woll.catholic.edu.au using flash and xml to control the main features of the site with html for some ‘pop-up’ windows. this will make it easy for anyone to update.

here is the current version of my site, all that needs to be done is data enrty (it is due monday so some small cahnges could be made)

www.hsc.woll.catholic.edu.au/home/matthewbyrne/site

it is designed to work on all systems with 56ker’s (like me ) in mind. it is also meant to be user firendly, but it also does have extra features for broadband users, such as a better intro (with jpgs, insteadof just flash text) for 56ker’s whom want to downlaod the intro go to

www.hsc.woll.catholic.edu.au/home/matthewbyrne/site/flashsite/intro.swf

please comment on any changes that could be made / what you think of it, and if i have time i will see if i can change it.

Looks ok… but never ever link to the actual swf, it looks unprofessional, and extremely pixilated on my end. Needs more of color a theme also… but that’s’ just me.

Keep working at it!

i linked the swf for people with 800x600 an lower resolution as it was designed for 1024x786.

the colour theem is the schools colours, and they wanted it to be simple, clean and not too flashy.

thanks for the reply, i will take on board what you said for my own online portfolio when i get around to creating it.

The intro hmmmm is a no for me, didn’t like it at all. For the site itself hmmm better off in HTML rather doing it in flash.

it is a bit late to change the site now as it is due tommorow, and the intro can be skiped, if you want to (it is suposed to be in the main site, but i gave the url to it for people whom have a slow connection so they can downlaod it if they want to see the intro, after downloading it you should reload the main page).

i wanted to do a flash website, so i could learn how to do it before i make my own portfolio.

The website looks ok but the intro need some fixing for sure–>extremely pixilated text, barelly readable.

The HTML thing I said kinda just a suggestion, it’ll save you some bandwidth for sure if you do it in HTML.

the site is really small in file size, so bandwith isn’t a problem (only 80k for the main movie another 10 k for all the xml files and another 20 k for the externally loaded swfs,)

the only reason i can think why the into is pixleated is that you didn’t reload the main movie after downlaoding it the intro in swf form, (to reaload go to http://www.hsc.woll.catholic.edu.au…tthewbyrne/site/flashsite )
becasue i tried it on my computer 1600x1200 and it worked fine.

thanks for the comments

No problem, goodluck with the site.

thnx

Wouldn’t have done this site in Flash…

It seems that alot of you dislike the idea of using flash for this site, but if you saw how the teeacher whom handles the site had the old html based site, you would proberly have done what i have done. The teach had all html files in the root folder with only half the immages in sub folders. at least with flash for a simple update all you have to do is edit text( well xml) . this site was designed to be easily edited, while keeping the site structure intact, such as folder and sbfolders.

This is my third completed website, and my first flash one (and i realy wanted to give flash a go), it is designed to look ‘good’ on all screen resloutions, while being easy to modify.

thanks for commenting i mainly thought that comments would be on text type and stuff like that.

Now that I think of it…I would remove the intro completly, it takes away from the site. The site itself isn’t that bad, but the intro kills it.

cheers!

my teacher kind of liked the intro and i want to get as many marks as posible, i need to bring my rank from 3rd in IT (i f***ed up my major test) to first, so i think i’ll keep it, well at least until my mark is done, then i could remove it depending on what my teacher thinks.

for a school… no… but good luck with your school work… :expressionless:

i work at a school as an IT tech guy and we are planning the new design for the school site.

currently http://www.heathdale.vic.edu.au

i was under the impression that school sites were considered somewhat federal in the sense that since they recieve federal funds, they must comply with guidlines set forth as in the webpage must be accessible by all who might use it. at least when i made a page for a professor at my high school a while back the district guidlines were that no site may be done completely in flash for accessibility and usablity issues. my general opinion is do whats best for the user and in this case it seems to be heavy on text and content, making me gravitate toward html.

yes

my school is actually in the private system, and it doesn’t have to follow many guide lines. we don’t get any IT funding from the government (that is the way the catholic system works over here) so we can do what we like with our website.

we had a project were you had to a multimedia task (that helped the school)
I wanted to design a flash website(to learn how to do it) and i asked my teacher if any teachers wanted a flash site that would be easy to update and he sugested the schools website, so i did it. If i was to go and do it again i would proberly just done it on some science subject or something becauase you are proberly right about doing it in html.

@lovepolice, nice site you got there like the colours, only one comment i really dislike scrolling through the page especially where some key info is involved (such as the principle)[i’m running 1600x1200 and i have to scroll to the bottom of the page.] but that is only my opinnion maybe you could add a navbar instead of having the current layout.

It’s not just IT funding, it can come in many differnent ways.

With vouchers comming up as a possibility you should think about accessibility for sure.

It is not difficult to include an accessible format, there are many features in flash, you just have to fill them out. It also helps with cross compatibility issues and is obviously helpfull to those who use screen readers, perhaps some of your fellow students are visually impaired?

yeah well it is a bit late for all that i handed it in. any way australia’s education system is different from the usa. flash works on all formats once the player downloaded.

umm i didnt make that. like i said. we are in the process of RE-DOING it, or re-designing it as it could be said. it will be fun.
