Whats a good plan for getting my hands dirty in Flash MX?
I already did the Macromedia tutorials(what a waste of time, no explanations - just a lot of do this and that)
checkin out the Kirupa content as we speak…
Any more ideas?

the forums here are a great resource, other than that i’d say look into some books. i had some success with Flash MM Unrealesed
I recomend getting started with animation and timeline control.
practice frame by frames and tweens. See how far you can push the limits of them.
Also get started with action script with basic play(), gotoAndPlay/Stop(), etc.

really I found the macromedia tutorials somewhat helpful. They at least showed me what I could do with FlashMX

The first set, the “getting to know you” stuf was good because it was straight forward. The Action Scripts section and the components section were less than desirable, they didn’t explain most of the code and had the tone of “take it or leave it” so it was difficult to take the stuff from those two tutorials and build off em.
Most importantly, play around! A hands on experience really helps in learning.
Doing the very basic animation and actionscript tutorials on this site is very important. Once you’ve got a good grasp on how basic things work, you can start reading the documentation, books, other people’s flas…

I was thinking about doing a footer as my first project.
I got a question for you though, some of the swf footers in these threads are just images. Is there any advantage to using the swf format to display images? File compression maybe?
I don’t think it’d make a difference. I think swf compresses it a bit, but doesn’t really make a difference since the difference would be in the 10-20kb.
research vector vs. rastor
flash = vector
photoshop = rastor
vector=small file sizes b/c it tells the comp to draw a line from pt a to pt b
rastor=large file sizes b/c it says draw this pixel here, this one there etc. it has better image quality for photographs though
