Newbie over his head

excellent thx, that was another of my concerns… so lemmie just get this 100 percent clear… the updated tutorial I sent you is correct right? I know im being a paint about it but I want to get it right this time!

It looks right to me:)

about the “other graphix” there is only 1, which is the side bar thinggi, I can better explain in a picture, I’ve attatched a JPG of what I mean… surely I can just add a layer called “background” and put it in there? I just need to know if that layer has to be in a specific location…

A layer called background would have to be all the way in the back aka UNDER all the other layers

[Actions]
[Button]
[Background]

Well that is just a quick example, if the lower the layer is, it will be overlapped by everything on top of it. If it is on top, it will not be overlapped by anything.

I’m realy realy sorry for dragging this thing out but it simply isnt working, I made one big mistake somewhere… I get this error when I preview it (look at bottom of page), I have also sent the FLA to your e-mail… would realy appreciate it if you could look through it…

Scene=Scene 1, Layer=button1, Frame=1: Line 1: Clip events are permitted only for movie clip instances
onClipEvent (load) {

  • John

You applied an onClipEvent on something other than a Movie Clip.

onClipEvent (load) will only work if it is applied directly to the movie clip.

If you want me to take a look you can send me the file.

I sent it in an e-mail, and the script was applied to my “movieclip” layer. If you didnt get my file I’ll re-send…

  • John

I got it. I fixed it. I resent it back to you:)

It should work now, I told you what was wrong in the e-mail:)

great, now I just have to fix the text (guess I made it too big as it sticks out from the button…

Yeah, it was kind of big:) I thought you were just using a font that was on your computer and since I didn’t have it, it defaulted to the standard, which is why it ended up bigger.

Good luck on the rest of it:) If you run into anymore problems I am here.

oh I know i’ll run into problems, you know there was a point where I actually understood this Flash program, but after I pressed the “Install” button it all went downhill

Haha, don’t worry, it took me a while just to get basic tweening down. For some reason I just could not get “Shape Tweening” or tweening with motion guides down. I eventually got it, but da*n did I feel pathetic:)

yes I know EXACLTY how you feel lmao, im suppost to be learning how to do this and become a profesional for a web-developement business and im not making the best progress…

now, back to the menu  is there any special way to make new buttons? they are all the same size and shape, im sure you can imagine they are just the logos of the others cars, same as the aston martin one, what areas can I copy and paste to save time? and is there any script changing involved?

  • thx again! - John

PS. I give you my word if I make a load of money off this deal I’ll send ya a fat royalty check  hehehe

Ok, as for copying and pasting to make it go faster, I think the only thing you can reuse is the invisible button.

Also on every movieClip/button thing you will apply the same actions as on the Aston Martin one.

Make sure the animations are all the same length so the code will work for all the buttons. That is about it. I hope it all goes well.

Haha, no need to send me anything, thanks for the thought though.

OK, I tried my best and here’s what happened…

my Rolls (second sliding button) doesnt slide, and if you click on the aston martin button it wont do a thing, but if you click on the rolls button it will take you to the aston page… I sent the fla again in your e-mail…

Hey, I just checked your file and noticed a little glitch in your animation. Your Frame 12 clip should be moved to around the same position as your Frame 11 clip. I am also working on-then resending you an updated file where each movieClip/button thing can go to a different link.

I will comment it inside the file so you can see what I mean. Now that you have two buttons it should be easier to show.

ok I updated my file, I also noticed in my file that my “invisiblock” layer had not been pulled to the bottom, neither change fixed the error but I’ll look at and study your file, then I will be able to finish it up!

  • John

I sent the file back. I hope I commented it well enough for you to understand.

Both buttons worked perfectly on my side after I edited it.

ahh I see where my error was now… I will try again with my 3rd button, hopefully I will get it right lol…
