OK. What would you consider The offspring as? (genre) :tb:
What is power pop ?
According to some of my friends, its a harder/faster version of pop. :d:

…? Theres a poll up there.
3 too,
when we have polls it’s still nice to know who voted for what, which is why we post too
- Soul :s:
I would go for none of those.
They aren’t really punk or pop or anything.
They’re kinda like rapesque rock with a hint of punk in my amazing opinion.
The funny thing is my playlist of 300+ plus songs, 5 of which are the offspring, started playing the offspring just now.
o, my bad! :asian:
Well back in the day on there first CD they were more like hard rockers and then they started do go pop with prity fly for a white guy then now they are starting to go back in the middle so i just say alternative
They uesd to be punk but have shifted to a more main stream alteranative. “Americana” was the big change.
they are not alternative. that is bull****. i refuse to think of them as “mainstream”.
lol “pretty fly for a white guy” and “Original Prankster” could it get any more main stream.
I don’t give a flying **** whether they’re considered ‘mainstream’ or not. What the hell difference does it make?
I’d say they were more rock than anything else. “Americana” did venture into more pop territory, this is true. But I don’t care, I bought the album, played it and I liked what I heard.
I own all their albums, and personally I’m glad they’ve not stagnated and kept churning out the same stuff again and again. They’ve tried new things, and still produced some cracking tunes. “Pretty Fly” was a quality tune.
I’ve also been to see them live at Wembley, and they really did rock. Seriously. No way would you accuse these guys of being pop if you’d watched them do the set I saw them do. Incredible.
As you might have noticed, I’m quite passionate about this particular topic. Anyone want to argue with me? :beam:
Alternative. Although i dont beleive that is a good thing to use as a category.
Alternative? Alternative to what?
Technically pop is alternative, as is garage music, dance music, blues, soul etc…
Don’t sit on the fence, Kit - what do you really think?
I like my music, that’s all. :beam:
And I’ve loved the Offspring ever since Ignition. Heh, when I was at school, everyone else was listening to Take That or New Kids or some other rubbish, and there was me listening to Offspring… :sure:

Just because a song is popular with the masses, it doesn’t mean it is ‘mainstream’. I can’t think of any bands that sound like the offspring do on ‘pretty fly for a white guy’
As for americana, people only say that was the big change because it was the album that got them more recognition. They opted for a more cartoon looking album cover, which naturally made them more popular with kids. It was only natural that ‘Pretty Fly’ would get released because it is so **** catchy and has the greatest scope for a wider audiance! (come, these guys are in to make money after all…)
The music itself was not a big change for the offspring, mearly the next step in their musical progression. Seriously, listen to their albums in release order, you can literally hear the band developing and maturing!
self titled ‘The offspring’ Is your typical teenage angst type album, ignition still has the angst, but has a more mature, cleaner sounder sound to it. Smash is where the band truely starts to develop, with the almighty song ‘Self Esteem’. You can then follow through ‘ixney on the hombre’ to ‘Conspiracy of One’ where the band develops its own, unique image and sound to the band we know today.
sigh

No way would i argue with that! I’ve seen them live too (right at the front baby!) and they truely do rock! I love the offspring sound, they sound so clean and fresh, no matter how many time i listen to them.
I totally agree. Smash was incredible, such great songs on there. Self Esteem literally rocks.
They’re not afraid to be funny either, ever listen to the words of the Disclaimer on Ixnay? Never fails to make me laugh whenever I hear it. Or Intermission, it’s so “Elevator Musak”. :sure:
Orange, I can’t think of anyone who sounds like them or they sound like either.
Heh heh, I own crazy taxi on the playstaion, and the only reason i bought it was because The Offspring did the music! (and Bad religion)
Noodles is really funny, when i saw them at Reading, he kept pointing at the noodle stands and saying they were named after him! Dexter wanted a ‘Dexter Stand’
