hey…got an issue here. i figured there may be some MAC gods out there who can help with this issue (since apple seems to be ignoring the problem and there is alot of noise about this problem going around).
i upgraded to Panther (10.3.5) from Jaguar (10.2.8). now my second monitor (which runs off a PCI ATI Rage 3D Pro card) only displays 4 bits in grayscale. Seems my card is not supported by Panther.
After reading some articles on the net, it seems i’m not the only one with this problem. Apple is ignoring the fact and ATI doesn’t have any drivers for the card because they say its packaged with the OS…but its not.
Anybody experiencing the same problem, or know of any solutions (low cost of course)? I’ve heard of “Flashing” a PC card to a MAC system, but don’t know what “Flashing” is for this case. Also read about downgrading back to 10.2.8, or finding a generic driver to use?
did you try using the old driver from Jaguar? if not flashing means you update the bios of the vid card by actually burning a new one into the chip but if done wrong it could kill your vid card, my suggestion try using the drivers that came with Jaguar or get the drivers for it somewhere on the net for jaguar and try using it on panther good luck.
no…haven’t tried using old driver from jaguar for panther. i guess i would find that on the jaguar cd???
i’ve read a bit about flashing…don’t think i’ll be headed that direction. i also was given advice to do a complete reinstall (reformatting the HD and saving all my info)…but i’ll try the drivers first.
i’ve been on several forums today and had some good responses. its all a blur now. here are some options to try (suggested by others) if anyone else reading this is having similar problems.
• reset the PRAM (hold Command - Option - P - R while restarting)
• backup all your files on the HD and do a clean reinstall of Panther, telling it to reformat the HD in the process.
• find the driver on the Panther CD (because ATI insists that all MAC drivers come with the system software) and install it
• Find the driver from previous OS (Jaguar) and install it on Panther system
• Flash a PC PCI card for a Mac
• Buy a different card
I will be trying alot of this tonight…hopefully. My last resort will be buying a “supported” PCI card. I’ll keep you all posted tomorrow or the next day…thanks again!
well…no luck so far. I have tried finding the drivers for the card (in both OSs), doing a clean install of Panther and reseting the PRAM. nothing is working. my next step is to just go back to using the previous OS (jaguar). I will have to find that startup disc and do a clean install of it on my drive, totally reformating the drive…
theres nothing wrong with using the earlier version, i just wanted to use some of the nice features found in panther…oh well. i’m still open to suggestions if anyone has any more.
