I have some questions here…
I just got a part time job, to re-design a website of a client.
His current website is really ugly… so uglyyy… for a corporate website.
so he wants me to re-design the whole pages, and I just counted them all… overall there are 100-110 pages.
the questions are:
how long do you think it will take to finish the whole website? because he keeps on asking me that question again and again… and I don’t have anyexperience working on such a huge site.
note: he gives me only 4 hours a day to work.
how much will you charge for… let’s say 100 pages website?
100 pages? wow that’s a gold mine!! All I can say is $5,000 plus, no less. Here’s a break down as to how I came up with such a figure.
You said he’s only giving you 4 hours a day to work on it so you’re gonna have to do a lil breakdown. This is what I would do:
Complete only 5 pages a day and set your hourly rate $50.
At that rate, it will take you approximately 20 days to finish 100 pages.
Multiply 20 by 4 since you’re only working 4 hours each day and you’ll come up with 80 hours of work.
Now multiply 80 with your hourly rate with is $50 and you’ll end up with $4,000.
Now that is just for labor, your designs and conceptual work would be another $1,000 on top of the $4,000.
This is a rough estimate as to how I would go about pricing a site like this, of course there would be other costs you need to put into consideration too, but hopefully this breakdown will give you a better idea, good luck. =)
of course he will want to negotiate your price. give him a little leeway but not too much. hold your ground and be very confident when talking to him. he will want to talk the price down so maybe you should have the lowest figure you could go set. tell him that’s the lowest you can go and provide a reason.
Aislin, did you even read the breakdown of how I came up with that figure? Most web designer’s hourly rate is atleast $50. With a massive website with 100 pages plus, I would never do it less than $5,000.
You might want to use templates. Or server includes.
Take no less than $35 an hour.
You will have to give yourself a timeline for when you want to finished the design comps, he will approve. That can be anything from a week to two weeks, depending on the clients reponse.
Once you have your design comps, one for front, and at least one for interior (if content is not too complex), you will move on to the building of the site.
Also do one page without the graphics, just to see how long it will take you to do, time yourself…don’t rush, because you wont be able to keep that as a steady speed for 4hrs. Once you know your time you can calculate how many you can do a day including breaks and testing. All of thise should be fairly straight forward and easy to do as long as they don’t want to change the categories and or content…because if they do change that, it will take much longer.
No matter what you do in yoru estimate…time wise or money wise…its good policy to always add 25% to your estimate, that way you shoudl have enough time to complete the project if problems may arise.
hey dudes thx for the info… EG thanks for the breakdown…
we made a deal of $35 an hour… I said to him all I could do was up to 4 pages a day… which is true… we are talking about a very complicated table and stuff…
akurth… again… that’s awesome man
I hope I can have that amount of money for the next 3 mos.
…dam… $100,000… you musta been in an amazing company!
Actually it was 1 million dollars.
I did this Web site for $87,000 (while working at an advertising agency as Art Director…at first our president said no way we can charge that…I then went ahead and for one day (it took that long) went through the entire site with my team and itemized and listed all the work to me done, and put a time schedule…at the end it would take $87,000 to properly execute it with all the changes…and I did it with another designer (two man team)), for the State of Vermont Department of Economic Development:
(don’t look at the homepage imagery it looks nasty now…since I no longer maintain it).
The other one we did for around $50,000 for the State of Vermont Department of Tourism (it still looks OK):
The one million dollar project was at the height of the Web design industry and that was for Plan Soft I doubt they are still around…venture capital…they were throwing the money around like there was no tomorrow. I did not due much on that project, only help one of our designers (I was lead designer at this interactive agency…they are no longer around either…they since changed their name and they are doing credit unions): no link for that project.
Now things are different…the US is in a recession, War is threatening businesses everywhere (globally) and everybody is laying off. So I am freelancing now and I charge much much less than I used to. What can I say…I got to eat.
So if you are getting $4000 out of your project you are doing well. Do 10 of those projects and you are all set for the year.
