Congratulations pi-air. You will be featured on the main page of Kirupa.com for this week. You may also post a graphical award from this page: http://www.kirupa.com/gallery/awards.asp.

Good job to all the participants. One of the valuable aspects of SOTW is to get valuable feedback about your site and get an idea of how well it stands beside some of the best on the web. Check back later as mod critiques will be posted later today.

CommanderCool This site is okay, at first glance, it doesn’t seem too interesting since the colors of the layout is a bit dull. The only thing that kept me on the site was the work samples, some of them are pretty good. Another thing I think could use improvement is the preloader, I rather see a preloader that displays some kind of progress indicator, either percentages or a progress bar. I know the sections have percentage preloaders, but the images could use a similar preloader as well. Some of the text is blurry which takes away the professionalism of the site.

::s®k®:: I see all these options for different introduction languages, but no option to skip the intro which is one bad thing so far. Another bad thing is the splash page is a mess, I always thought splash page should be simple and clean. As for the site, it’s the same story, very busy, and very messy. The logo and other images throughout the site are extremely low quality and pixelated. Overall, I just feel like this site was designed by 2 people or more people, because it’s so inconsistent.

pi-air Seen this site last week, critiqued it last week. It was a tough decision between Tie and this site, but I voted for this site since it was a bit more consistent and easier to navigate than Tie’s site.

lala__ Seen this site already as well, critiqued it already as well. Very simple and clean.

Beautel This still has a long way to go before it can win SOTW. First off, there needs to be a more variety of images and transitions. The main image has a grid effect applied to it that is too intense so it’s practically covering the image. It needs to be toned down and descrease the size of each box as well. Or even better, don’t apply any grid effect at all since it only makes the layout look busy.

supersatori This so called site has some nice effects in the background, but is it a site? Where is the layout? Where is the nav at? It’s just text content thrown in and links applied, what a shame…Judging by the effects, I would hope this designer would have spent more time on an actual layout.

Optical A lot of problems with this site so I’ll try to list them all.

  1. layout has some jagged edges, especially around some of the inner button areas.
  2. Some images are poor quality and pixelated.
  3. The on and off music buttons needs a better hit area, it took me forever just to click the right spot to turn off the music.
  4. Content text is hard to read, I would suggest making it a bit larger and using a san serif font like arial or verdana to make it easier to read.
  5. You’re trying to build a professional site so lose the mouse trailor, that’s kiddy stuff.

Tie I was about to give up hope on this week’s entries, but this site is by far, one of the better ones out of this week’s entries. Even though I couldn’t read some of the content since it’s a different language, I was impressed by the amount of detail that went into this site. The design is very conceptual and the effects are smooth.

UncleGuito The current state of this site has no chance of winning SOTW. This designer has posted in Site Check for critiques and has recieved more than enough comments to improve the site. Since the designer chose to ignore those suggestions and comments, I will not critique this site.

<hr>

I don’t see what’s wrong with pi-air’s site. His site is much better than some of the recent SOTWs in my opinion.

CommanderCool: No skip intro button, I had problems with the menu, and the colors make me want to shoot myself.

::s®k®::: :trout:

pi-air: Chose promise, chose due, you have my vote this week. Amazing site.

lala__: :trout:

Beautel: :trout:

Supersatori: ArteFactory probably stands a better chance than this site. More “conventionnal”, less exploration required.

Optical: :trout:

Tie: Not bad, and the nav is fun (but very confusing), but it’s not very “fluid” (c’est pas très fluide, quoi, ça manque un peu de liant).

UncleGuigo: AAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! :trout: :trout:

pi air: ok the desing is not bad, but it’s kinda empty! c’mon the guy is an artist, a dancer, and that’s all they come up with, a four item menu with lots of text? and a few pictures and a new window to get the video footage, now that flash can stream video? get inventive/up to date! and the one thing i ALWAYS check: the contact form! if you just fill in “@.” into the email adress, it gets sent, without name and message! bad. and what use is the “low quality” btn, except making it look bad? no need to highlight visited links, there’s just 4 anyway…

commander cool: why does it open on just a menu and lots of empty space? terrible! the font for the loading % is terrible! transitions are nice and varied, good. highlight visited links! same critique for the video again, no need to pop-up a mini quicktime window, make it in flash, if the person can view the site, they won’t need the extra plug-in…what’s the film section for, thestuff is so small it’s unreadable, no use!? contact opens the mail client, at least that works…

::s®k®:: with an intro page like that, the colors used, the promo pop-up (i now switch off my pop-up killer for sotw), the mistakes in different languages…it took me about 5 secs to close this site…beurk, as they say in France…baaad design! and not even in french, lol

lala_ : nothing changed, still spelling mistakes on the intro page, still no jumping mango instead of the box…the “other” section opens a sub-menu which closes almost instantly…nice design, but still to basic.

beautel: who told ya i need a full screen background for the small content pop-up? leave my browser alone! where are the menu items? i don’t wanna have to guess/remember where those buttons will take me, haven’t you read/learned by heart the Jacob Nielsen book?! (havin’ fun here…) and then, the actual content in the site is just a few lines of text in each section? what’s this good for? why do i have to click a portfolio, nothing happens, and i have to click again? and then you get screenshots of websites…ok, so which part of them were you responsable for?
what’s the client login for, opens a new page with links, noe does anything than return a 404… and why put an ftp link on a public portfolio site, wanna get hacked?

supersatori: dull, no color, not engaging…doesn’t make me feel like i wanna click anything…text text text…i liked the car cursor.

optical: unreadable, thus useless site! get them stars of my mouse!

tie: intro= under construction! non mais! so don’t put it in sotw if it’s en construction, or remove these words before. and then “attention, il se peut qu’il y ai des liens cassés!” which says, i got some links here, but some might not be working…so are we supposed to find out for you? check your links and get them to work, or remove them! where’s the menu, what do those numbers mean? guesswork again…and no indication which number has been clicked already…so i visit an empty section 3 (under construction, remember…) twice… guestbook: check my entry, i was allowed to post 1 1 1 1 as name/mail/url/message…do a minimum of checking if you wanna keep it clean… i like the links part, nice idea with the globe (give the guy some rest…)!
a last one: not “Maillez” but Mailez…c’est pas de la maille, c’est un mail…

guito: what made you think you should even try to submit this for sotw, did you take a look at any of the previous entries/winners?

hard words this week, sorry to anyone who takes offense, just expressing honest opinions here…

edit
is nobody even gonna “critiquer” here? do you like these sites?
end edit

CommanderCool: Nice looking, but there’s no way to skip that menu loading which would be nice as it takes a while. Once loaded, the opening page is quite bare, with only the menu at the bottom. That’s easy to use though, which is good. There’s some lovely artwork on here as well I thought.

::s®k®::: : Again, no way to skip all that animation when you first load. It was a bit of a mystery what the site was about until I looked at the gallery. Text was difficult to read as well.
pi-air: Liked it last week and I still do. Same comments apply.

Lala: The preloader appeared, but no indication of progress was shown on it. Was there meant to be a bar going along it? Seemed very empty. I usually like minimalistic sites, but there was too much white space going on here.

Beautel: Pop up! Minus points! Nice looking to begin with, but then you wonder where the navigation is. Bit of a mystery, so people might get confused by that. I think the white grid was too heavy. If you’d made it more transparent that would have looked better. The text loaded very slowly as well.

Supersatori: Different. Kind of reminds me of an early computer game loading screen, you know? Didn’t like the fact that a lot of things opened in pop ups. Could have done without that. Very text oriented. Obviously that’s the idea, but not sure many people would go for that style.

Optical: Very very slow loading. The stars following my mouse drove me mad, and they kind of lagged behind by a few seconds. Nice pictures and easy to follow navigation, but the text was unreadable. Try using Verdana or Arial fonts, not Times Roman. Not too keen on the blue borders either.

Tie: Maybe it’s because I don’t speak French, but I found it difficult to work out what was going on here. I was never 100% sure if something was loading or was just static. Nice colours, I liked those, but the navigation is a nightmare. 01, 02 and 03 tell me nothing. Apologies though if I just missed stuff that was in French and right infront of me.

Uncle Guito: Sorry, but this looked ugly. The colours were bland, and the text was blocky, especially the navigation boxes. The text on them looked out of alignment too. Animations on the buttons were a little jerky.I also had no idea what this site was even about.

I’ve gone for pi-air. I really do like this guy’s site.

CommanderCool - no skip intro - ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ - fell asleep waiting for something to happen.

::s®k®:: - award on index page is tacky. No skip intro. choppy, and way too slow.

pi-air - very choppy on my computer. I think this could have been done without a lot of the animation.

lala__ - I hate to see any “coming soon” on any site. Either populate the space, or remove the links.

Beautel - popup for no reason. mystery meat navigation. There is a reason buttons have descriptions with them.

supersatori - this site just confused me. I felt as if I had no idea what was going on, where to go, or even what to look for.

Optical - font way too small. mouse trailer is tacky, and taxes my machine too much to view this site. Too bad, the graphics looked interesting.

Tie - no skip intro… took forever to load, and for no reason.

UncleGuito - no comment

None of the Above was my vote this week. When will people read the comments on previous entries before submitting a site? A site has to be user intuitive to be considered a good site, and in my mind none of the entries this week had the end-user’s interest foremost in their designs.
