Sci fi made assistants look a lot cleaner

A lot of the sci-fi computer assistants people grew up with were less about raw intelligence and more about being calm, fast, and weirdly reliable. Real AI tools are smarter in some ways and messier in all the ways that actually matter.

I keep wondering whether the bigger gap isn’t capability, it’s trust. Has anyone else felt that the fantasy version of an assistant was basically “good interface design with a personality”?

“weirdly reliable” is doing so much work in sci‑fi — those assistants feel less like genius minds and more like a super polished UI that just never flakes. real tools can be crazy capable, but the second you get one confident wrong answer you’re back to treating it like an intern you have to supervise, not an assistant you can lean on.
