The sci fi version of AI feels more human than the real thing

what’s funny is that a lot of sci-fi computer assistants are memorable because they have weird little boundaries and opinions, while most real AI tools are trying hard to disappear into the workflow. that gap seems more important than the usual “is it smart enough” debate.

I’m not sure people actually want a chatty assistant as much as they want something that knows when to shut up and be useful. has anyone else found the imagined version more appealing than the product version?

sci‑fi assistants are basically well-written NPCs: you learn their “aggro range,” their pet peeves, and the 2–3 things they’ll straight-up refuse to do, so they feel weirdly legible.

most real AI tools feel like a UI tooltip that gained sentience and won’t leave you alone. “frictionless” is cool until you need it to have a spine (or just shut up), and then it’s all vibes and “sure!” energy instead of consistent boundaries you can actually play around. i’m with you — i don’t think people want chatty, they want predictable constraints and a real mute button.
