Hi, 2 max topics in 2 days. Dont get angry please.
I was working with a scene i made. And i have 2 problems that i worked hard but couldnt solve.
I applied depth of field, but the part that must be blurred is blurred ok, but so pixelish. I want it be better quality one. I played with numbers but no answer.
I couldnt drop shadow to the plane. I put light and turned shadows onā¦no. Applied brazil Global Illumination, no effect. I mean the shadows of the pieces fall to the other pieces but not to the plane.
Iāve never used Brazil so canāt help there, but worst case scenariom, why donāt you do multiple passes of the scene (i.e. furthest meshes rendered only, mid-range only, close-up only) and then fake DOF in photoshop
You can use maxās default DOF renderer whilst rendering with brazil because it is an effect that is added post-render. Choose effects in the render menu, add ādepth of fieldā, pick a camera (has to have a camera to calculate from, you canāt do it just in perspective view) and render away. You can play with the settings to adjust the effectā¦ although personally I think brazilās is much better (uses bokeh calculations to get a more accurate result).
You could try changing the filter in the brazil DOF rollout to something like āflat discā rather than the default āimageā.
To clear the brazil banners you have to buy the full version.
(ps. your upright chess piece closest to the camera is not sitting on the ground plane correctlyā¦ you might want to check into using maxās align tools, which makes positioning objects a hell of alot easier)
I did as you said ironikart. I added a new camera to the scene and added dof as an effect in render menu. picked camera, picked node. in focal parameters, i picked at first custom with 10 horizontal and vertical focal loss settingsā¦nothin happened.
I changed from custom to use camera, i set horizontal and vertical focal loss to 500 ! but still no effectā¦
Maybe i dont know how to use it but i played with all the effects.
I did some very quick test renders with Brazilās DOF and max default DOF and this is what I came up with. Check your settings again. Make sure that with the default DOF you have a focal node (camera target does fine, here Iāve used the ādice 01ā object).
These renders were done in Max 5.
Hereās the max default test render with DOF enabled:
Hereās the brazil render with DOF set to āexponentialā to get a smoother blur.
