Dear, RenaissanceGirl

I send you this message to suggest my web page “Light: So simple and yet illusive”.
It would be an honor and serious help if my web site was included among the “sites of the week”.

Web address:
http://light.physics.auth.gr/

Description:
Light as a natural substance. What humanity used to believe about light from ancient times since nowadays.

The site includes:
-The History of Light

-The Encyclopaedia of Light (Basic and advanced knowledge about light. Laws, concepts and phenomena)

-The Laboratory of Light (Virtual interactive experiments about the nature of light - Java applets)

-A game and a test

The page is part of my Ph.D. dissertation and it has scientific - educational character and there is no commercial interest in there.

Thank you for the cooperation

Good job to all the participants. One of the valuable aspects of SOTW is to get valuable feedback about your site and get an idea of how well it stands beside some of the best on the web. Check back later as mod critiques will be posted later today.

Hey Jason!
Congratulations - your site is really nice, and I really liked the U2 songs you had there =)

Cheers!
Kirupa :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for the support!! I appreciate my site being chosen as site of the week on such a respectable site. I am looking forward to the input and Critique. Don’t be nice to me guys; I’m an art student who’s used to it:goatee:

Light Website
[]Nice try, but not SOTW material. The design isn’t consistent and there are no preloaders so each section takes awhile to load.
[
]An interesting idea with the upper menu, but it’s a little obscure to begin with. It would also be a good idea if the draggable grey box was confined to a specific area - I could drop it behind all the main content and ‘lose’ it. Also the orange box doesn’t quite fit over the blue gaps. Just a little niggle for me. Nice icons on the lower menu though, simple to understand.I think users would appreciate preloaders or some kind of indication as to how their page selection is coming along. A lot of the time I wasn’t sure if the page existed or not.
[]simple, interesting, nothing outstanding. Does the job.
[
]Some of the text…although clear… is hard to read on the background images as the background distracts from the text. No preloaders caused for some waiting and hoping that something would appear… sometimes it seemed as though nothing was going to load because some sections took a while to load. You should make your dynamic textboxes unselectable because everywhere I got my mouse turns into a text editor icon because there is a dynamic textbox there. As mentioned before… define a draggable area for that grey block clip. While waiting for a section to load (well… assuming one was loading as there was nothing there but grey) I wa splaying with your block and dropped it behind the content area… now I can’t get it back because I can’t close out the content and it is behind a textbox so I am unable to drag it Your site is simple, and does exactly what it is supposed to do, but I don’t really see anything that outstanding to make this SOTW material.
<hr>Project Millad.V3
[]I remember this site, it’s the one with the M&M candy logo. The flash is pretty smooth, but the design isn’t too appealing. There isn’t a consitent use of color here so even though it’s clean, it’s still boring. I would set up a more consitent color scheme that is more vivid in colors to get rid of the “clinic” look.
[
]First two things - opened in a pop up and asked me to install something from the Gator Corporation. Instant no-no’s in my book. Once inside, the site looks quite nice, I particularly like the animated image, it uses some good colours. But if I were you I’d run your copy through a spell checker, though I appreciate English may not be your first language.
[]Just because you put a preloader on a site does not give free reign on the file size.
[
]By the way, I voted for Project Millad.V3 for his transitions which were very smooth and fun to watch

Represented by M&Ms? Well anyway, first thing first… why do you open in _blank? You contain it in a regular size window anyway, so instead of making it open in a new window, why not do the same window? The amount of text you use in each section makes it busy and distracting since it is all scrunched up into such a small area. In your profile you have a box that says “Image”, but no image appear. You Work section is empty, it has buttons and such, but nothing to show but a rollover that says empty on all of them. I got a SAT_1 Data Failed animation in the Friend section, I am assuming this means any externally loaded content didn’t load, none of your friend links worked either. Also your general layout has a few hints of Unflux in it, but nothing major.
<hr>Gilluminate
[]Interesting layout, but this teal green monochrome color scheme isn’t too appealing in my opinion. Some of the small fonts are a bit blurry as well.
[
]Personally, I like the turquoise colours and think they work nicely. Not too overpowering. Simple to follow navigation which is always a plus, and I really like the way the hexagons move in from all sides with your options. Music has and off button, which I appreciate. Overall very appealing. Good artwork too. My vote goes to Gilluminate.
[]As for Gilluminate, Im not sure what it was, but something about it made just plain like it. It was practical enough without being too typical.
[
]Funny, I really dislike Gilluminate’s site. I find the color to be very dull, and the nav very unpractical. Bah, les goûts et les couleurs ne se discutent pas, as we say in French…
[]Yeah when I took my analytical eye to it, I got the same thing, but the first impression I got just as a normal viewer wasnt that bad… maybe it was the shapes used. I think that intrigued me most. I dunno. I dunno anymore - Im too tired
[
]But the structure and use of Flash was why I voted for it.
[]I liked the fuctionality, but hated the colors. You still got my vote.
[
]Not a fan of the color scheme. Your navigation is easy to follow, and I do like how the hexagons animate in and remain easy to navigate. Nice artwork. I voted for Gilluminate because even though that site wasn’t exactly impressive in the animation/color department, it was the most functional and the site I could find the least usablity issues with and that’s a major factor.
<hr>YoYo MHZ
[]I remember this site. I can see that there has been a lot of changes and it’s much better now compared to last time. I like the animations and the layout is cleaner. I would like to see better transitions between sections and a more consistent color scheme though.
[
]Nice alien animations, I like the cartoon style. Not convinced about the skin it’s in though, the colours don’t quite work for me. The rollovers on the menu buttons also seem a bit unclear. There was some lovely Flash work here with the cartoons, but sometimes it didn’t make a whole lot of sense.
[]You’ve improved this site a lot, but the mystery meat nav still kills it for me.
[
]Wow, this site has changed since you last submitted, that’s a good thing. Still not a fan of mystery meat navigation though. And why does your alien guy only say what the Movies and Artwork sections are for. The transitions are still jumpy and could use a little animation to it, you appear to load the same exactly background image/animation for each section. I don’t see why you don’t just load in your boxes as seperate .swfs on top of the original background, that way you only load it once instead of over and over and over.
Raw Pixels
[]I like the menu and the nice vector animations, but as for the layout and color scheme, I think those needs work. The grey background doesn’t go too well with your colorful animations. If you want to keep it simple then just use a white background, it would make things cleaner looking as well.
[
]The animations and transitions here are very smooth, but it’s so tiny… I run a large res monitor and had trouble reading the words. That could also be to do with the grey background and words not standing out clearly.
[]nothing more to comment that hasn’t been said.
[
]I am not on a large res monitor and still had trouble seeing everything. I think you tried to squeeze everything into TOO small of an area. And your slightly darker greys on lighter greys are hard to read as well. The transitions and animations are nice. A few color issues, and the fact that you need a magnifying glass are what draw me away from this site.
<hr>aaronsleeper design
[]Images are pixelated and text are blurry. Nice navigation slide effect, but the site needs more work.
[
]I hate aaronsleeper because he took one of bit’s experiments without giving credit (personal >> waves).:trout:
[]Looks nice and bright with the red, but you opened up a pop up which I didn’t want. Menu was clear to use, though your fonts were a little blurred. The ‘click to zoom’ effect was a nice touch and worked well, just occasionally the images looked pixellated a touch.
[
]this just goes to a thank you screen. Maybe another useless popup without a link.

Nice navigation slide effect. Might want to consider making the dynamic text unselectable so that incessant text edit cursor doesn’t keep happening. I also like the click-zoom preview, but is there any way we can see the original project or artwork so we can see it without pixelation or distortion? And yes, you should definitely credit Keith Peters for your Flash Experiment that you have in the Personal Section he created that effect and had it in one of the FOE books and on his site in his Lab. I also don’t see much point to the Machine Info drop down in the corner… seems like one of those “Just because you can doesn’t mean you should” deals.
<hr>Metroid Prime
[]I like this site. Nicely laid out and very consistent. This is the first time I’ve seen a pixel font with a heavy weight and it’s a bit hard to read at times.
[
]I voted Metroid because I liked the consolish tone of the site.
[]Nice layout and colour scheme, and I like the graphics (although I assume they aren’t all originals). In particular the line drawings work very well with the more detailed images to provide contrast.
[
]interesting. maybe more interesting if I knew anything about Metroid.

The color scheme and font are sometimes hard on the eyes, but overall the layout and imagery used are very nice. Since you disabled scrolling my poor tiny monitor couldn’t scroll to see the whole site, and since the navi was at the bottom I was forced to hit F11 to maximize… which is almost like making me do a full screen… wasn’t a big fan of that.
<hr>Mr. Mass Interactive
[]It was a tough choice between the metriod site and this site, but I like this one since more because it’s more orginal and creative. This designer came up with his own concept, while the metroid site designer just used metroid as his concept.
[
]Lovely graphics, but a bit jerky, could use being smoother. There was also a lot going on at some stages, the bubbles bursting was way too much. I wasn’t sure if I’d triggered something or it was just programmed to do this. That main menu takes a while to load, too. It would be nice if it didn’t do the whole shebang everytime you go back there.
[]I think MrMass did too much of that cheerio explosion thing and became really slow on my computer so that kind of lost it for me there… that and some of the sections seemed unresponsive or lacking mobility/interactivity.
[
]This site took forever to load. I dislike it when I get a preloader telling me how long it is taking to download a site. Again, just because a preloader is used does not give license to run up the file size. A good design works well on all platforms, and connection speeds.

Good thing I waited to critique, I previously viewed this site and there was no way to enter… nothing was clickable. I didn’t like that it was a giant pop up. Great animation and transitions, with an easy to follow navigation. Were those buttons in the Mad Skills section supposed to do anything? Becasue they didn’t do anything but glow on rollover for me. I am assuming they are just a list of your skillz, but I don’t see why you need to make them buttons if they aren’t clickable. Despite that the animation was nice, I didn’t like how when I clicked the home button I had to watch the entire “animate in” sequence all over again, but you do have that smaller navigation in each section which prevents having to do that… so that is a good workaround, but some people may find the small “navigation” link a but obscure.
Thanx very much for your comments RenaissanceGirl !

I dont understand what you mean of these word(s) !

-I remember this site, it’s the one with the M&M candy logo-

? What do you mean ?

I did not take the design from M&M I have check there site ?
The Logo ! I did not take it from M&M !
It have nothing to do with M&M !

Thank you agein for your comments ! :beam:

well I see that RenaissanceGirl is a pro, great comments, you really analize my site from 0, great stuff, I will work on those points, and I just realise the site few weeks a go, its still in beta version…hopefully with the time I will fix all the mention points and facts and I will try to improve on speed and navigation.

I will submit my site once beta testing is over…and then we will see

thanks

Thank you all for the comments on my site. They are all appreciated.

question re: all the comments about Keith Peter’s experiment

you all called it well I did get that from there, but that was a tutorial and like other tutorials I’ve done I’ve added my own twist, however small they may be, some are more different than others. I do want to give credit where it’s due but i also want to emphasize the part I played in it since it is a site about my work.

do you all think it would be appropriate to have a tab that would bring out a window giving credit to the originators of the code … or how do you think i should do that?

or should i eliminate that section all together?

re: pixelated images. that happens (to my understanding) when you scale things in flash. I should have full screen images of the work though … thats a good thought.

Thank you all for the time you took to look at my site.
Comments, compliments, criticisms are always welcome

re:

I hate aaronsleeper because he took one of bit’s experiments without giving credit (personal >> waves).

I’ve had some time to think about this in between meetings today, so here’s my response:

This hurt my feelings and lowered my opinion of the mods on this site due to it’s un-moderated nature. it was crass, insensitive and not very helpful. apparently this person has never heard of constructive criticism

To say you hate something sounds not only unprofessional but childishly inarticulate. the only reason given is not even substantial.

When a child who is learning to build takes a set of building blocks and follows the instructions to make a creation, then beams proudly at their work: Do you say it is any less of an accomplishment because they “copied” something someone has already done? Do you tell them you “hate” their work, something they strived to create, or do you support them and understand it’s a learning process that everyone goes through?

Keith Peter’s was not born knowing action script. He copied and studied just like everyone else. He published that code so that others might have another resource from which to learn. I followed the tutorial and learned from it. I posted my achievement on my site. And should anyone ask me about it I would tell them exactly where I learned it.

It’s no secret. I have nothing to hide. So for you to say that you hate my work was, in my opinion, uncalled for.

To the rest of you: your opinions are valued and I thank you for your time.
