First off, Fiery, Your parents may have brought you up atheist, but your choice of Christianity reflects the society you live in. It was unlikely you would choose to become Muslim or Siekh. And that was more my point. Someone growing up in Utah is unlikely to become Hindu… Unless of course they do it as a rebellion, in which case they are still being influenced in their decision.
Here’s the thing, when you cross a border, the border gaurd doesn’t have to prove that you don’t exist, you have to prove that you exist (as the person you claim to be) by showing him/her a passport. Similarily, I don’t have to prove that aliens don’t exist, I must be shown that they do. Or if an explorer finds a new land, they must prove the land’s existance, not the opposite.
It’s not the job of an atheist to disprove the existance of God. You must show me that God exists.
Thats exactly my view on things. I think theres so much of the Bible is just crap and theres no way it could be true but I still beleive in God. I still drink quite a lot because its something I really enjoy and I don’t feel that there is a reason for me not to as long as I’m not off my face every night, but I will no longer do drugs because even I noticed that I was a changed person around the period that I was using them heavily.
I’m not a Christian because I want to help the world, I’m a Christian because I beleive that there is a God somewhere watching over us and I think He deserves some credit for what He’s doing.
You asked me to prove the existance of God, well, can you prove that He doesn’t exist?
You want us to prove to you that something that doesn’t exist, doesn’t exist.
Thats about as silly as believing in a God, when there is no evidence of it.

Theres a bit of a difference between proving your little box in your head there is empty and that a God doesn’t exist. I don’t really care if you beleive in God or not, thats your problem, live your life how you want to, I really don’t give a flying ****. If you don’t have faith, don’t, it suits me perfectly. I chose to have faith and I chose to follow God in every way that I feel is necesary (or however thats spelt…)
So what bits do you belive in the Bible ?
I beleive that there is God, who created the world and still to this day rules it and controls every fine detail of what goes on in it.
You and I are more than just animals. This isn’t because humans are just at the top of the food chain, there is a fine line of seperation between regular animals and humans when you look at their works.
Vulcan, I understand then that if your life ends at 30 or so, then you would most likely be commiting suicide. I don’t know many people who would want to revert to living in caves, and many people also do not naturally die at 30 in our age. I’m seeing that what I first thought about atheists before I started this thread was somewhat correct. You have a clear purpose to life, but once that is done you choose that ultimate task, suicide.

You stay alive because you still have the drive of self preservation, and personal gratification.
Even when a baby can’t speak, has no concept of God, it won’t crawl off a ledge.
(proven) It has a natural instinct that will keep it alive. Once you have had kids it doesn’t magically turn off. You still have drive to keep yourself alive.
Even a bum on the street freezing and starving will try to stay alive ! Religious or not.
Then there is gratification… As animals we our behaviours are governed by gratification. Perhaps tomorrow I may go Sky diving, or watch a movie I like.

Well your a scientist, this will apply well to you. When exactly was space completly covered and every aspect of it examined and explained? Oh hold on… it still hasn’t been, so how exactly do expect people who don’t even know what space is to explain it and explain how God formed… well… everything. I don’t know how God did it but I’m pretty sure that a load of crap can’t come from no-where and create a planet or two. I don’t beleive the Bibles version of “God creating the world in seven days” or whatever because no-one then had any knowlege whatsoever of space etc so I think it would be quite hard for them to write “well on the second day God took that matter and he made it explode and form earth and eight other planets.” These people wern’t exactly scientists.
Well here’s the thing… My life is extremely fufilling without thinking about God at all. I hope to achieve certain goals, then I hope to retire to Tuscany and have a vinyard and olives where I can sit about an write… Seems extremely fufilling to me. And I won’t even be sad when it’s all over, for I will have reached paradise here on Earth, in my life.
As for the milky way…
Our understanding on the origin of the universe is hampered by the lack of direct observations. In essence, astronomers are trying to put together a 10,000-piece puzzle from the dozen pieces found underneath the table that were chewed on by the cat.
Basically astronomers don’t quite know, but there are a few theories. What they do know is quite amazing.
“On a clear, moonless night, one can often see a hazy, luminous band stretching across the sky. The ancients devised many fanciful myths to account for this “milky way.” Today, we realize that this hazy band is our view from the inside of a vast disk that is home to billions of stars, including our own Sun, and vast amounts of interstellar dust. This is our galaxy — the Milky Way.”
But they make theories based on what they observe, as opposed to believeing something because it’s written in a book. Not that the Bible ever mentions galaxies, or explains dark matter, or anything like that.
Funny I thought they wrote the Bible based on what God told them.
I am sure he could have explained it to them, I am sure that he could have told them he made a universe and where on 1 planet.
But then the Bible is just a fiction book man wrote, and as they knew nothing more than this world. Thats all they could put in the book.
I must admit the Bible supplies some laughs. I was reading through randomly, and I came across a passage in Exodus 29:5
"… And gird him with the curious girdle of the e’-phod"

We have an old and new testament which are completely different in style as well as how they portray God. We have multiple men writing epistles intitled Peter, we have mentions of e-phod, lol.
What’s always got me the most about the Bible is that back then there was sooooo much divine intervention. God was always talking to people and demanding rams and e’-phod girdlings. Then he pulled out, conveniently, and has not made an appearence in the last 2000 years. What’s that all about?! Least he could do is get Bush out of office for us.
