Trends

Treds : the general direction that somethings takes, a continuing tendency.

There are also website treds.

This is my theorie:
Last year everybody was doing something with grid.
but this year it’s everthing with pixels. Pikelfonts, pixelguys, pixeleverthing.

But what will the next tred be?
And who are the tred setters?
2advanced ? Kirupa ?

Trends? I dunno, it’s like clothes, everything changes, fashion, car and design. And yes, I think it’s definitely kirupa.com who will set the next tre(n)d…

Well I don’t know what a pikelfont is, but I know pi<B>x</B>el fonts are becoming widely used simply because they stay crisp even when in a static textbox or embedded in a dynamic textbox. No one wants ugly blurry text, so why not go with a crisp pixel font?

And there is no possible way to predict the next trend… you just have to sit back and wait and see :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m with lost - it is difficult to predict what will be the next big trend. I think pixel anything will stay around - they are more clear and crisp. Something like orisinal.com maybe a new trend in creating aesthetically pleasing designs, but I don’t know

Cheers!
Kirupa :bandit:

Kirupa’s right. That place has some cool stuff!
http://www.ferryhalim.com/orisinal/ani/colors.htm
…You get redirected… but yeah, it’s the same site.

ferry halim is amazing. it was my main insperation to get inot design. i think i was one of the first ppl to mention him here. It may be a little cutesy to become a huge trend but it could catch on. Every thing he does is so beutiful and looks so simple when there is so much going on in it.

I see two new styles becoming very popular soon. Minimal and grunge.

i also agree, it’s too difficult to predict. sintax is probably close to
what’s to come becaue it seems grunge is all i see now. The
techie style is definitely dying tho. I’m interested and excited to
see what direction it goes.

It’s strange because I feel that the minimal look has been and gone and now is coming back again. It’s really hard to define anything anymore…

The main trends for me are probably, pixel stuff and 3d spikes… That’s what is really popular on none formel sites. And + A lot of people use them as grids on 3d stuff…
I is really hard to know what will come. I think vector art will come into advertisment banners and stuff… That’s something I would predict

Tuknuk’s probably right- the minima look is here to stay, at least for awhile.

This is my favourite winamp skin yet. The perfect size when it is collapsed.

Here it is before you collapse it.

lost:

if programmed correctly, and used in large enough font sizes (above 12 pt), which is usual in all forms of publications, then the pixel fonts are not needed.

It’s this trend of making the text real small, so that you can cram 3 times as much text in a small area that makes text hard to read.

Flash designers have done amazing sites before it became trendy to use pixel fonts…

Just an opinion of someone who doesn’t have 15 yr old eyes…

Rev: How much harder is it to read a pixel font on a higher res monitor?

I know on my 800x600 pixel fonts are a perfect reading size for me (well most of them at least), but of course on a higher res, it makes them smaller… so just outta curiousity… is it really that much harder to read on a higher res?

i don’t think it’s that bad. i hate 12 point font on websites. it’s so ugly.

lost:

yes, I use a 19" monitor. Most pixel fonts are designed to be used at 6, 8, or 10 pt at the most. Think if you picked up a magazine and found the font a good 40% smaller than it is now, just because it is trendy for the look…

As an example, how many large websites actually use pixel fonts? Don’t you think MM would use them if they actually looked better on most of the monitors? How about MSN? or Yahoo? If smaller pixel fonts were easier to read, they would all be going there…

This only came about in the last 18 months… prior to that, nobody said anything about Flash and blurry text (we simply made the text larger), don’t forget, the average web surfer does not want to read anything at all (they want pictures)…

Rev

that’s not true. people don’t want only pictures. people come to the web for information, not pictures.

pinx:

In general, the majority of web surfers want to get to the point they were looking at, skim over some text, and get to the pictures. Most do not want to “read a website.” They want to be able to read the links/buttons/nav, have it be intuitive, and not be full of text.

I have been in on research studies on this very issue, with Macromedia…

Rev

well yeah but they still want some text. if everything was just pictures, that would suck. like if they visited a business website, they’d want to know a little bit about the business, right?

like I said, they want to skim the text.

too much text, and they don’t read it, they just go away…

Rev

We really lost the topic. I work on 1280 and pixelfonts are still nice to read.
http://www.cnn.com/ For example uses pixel fonts in the upper right corner for the google ad… But this is pretty much everything.
I think sites like msn don’t use pixelfonts because they simply don’t look as good as verdana and friends in middle size…

Verdana is my favorite font hands down.

And sites like MSN and such don’t use pixel fonts because their content is HTML generated… and pixel fonts in HTML look crappy, not to mention for viewers without the font you need to use CSS… and it doesn’t work on every browser :stuck_out_tongue:
