Vector portraits

hey everyone. I wanted to make portraits / bust shots using the method on the superlooper website. Here is a sample. If you have any ideas, shortcuts please let me know. I can do the face, but the mouth and the eyes always mess me up and I give in. Below is a couple of samples.

Trace bitmap in flash

I did that but the eyes and mouth don’t come out right. Thanks thought.

you are just gonna have to practise big fella !!

whast that saying … practise makes perfect !! :thumb: good luck

[:ninja:EZEkiel:ninja:]

yep, if the face looks good but the eyes and mouth doesnt then its you  Im having the exact same problem, just keep practicing

Also, in one of those pics in superlooper they have a small tut about how to make them and they used Illustrator and PS, search in one of the pics…

I found the tut, it’s kind of an excavation to find, but they use, Macromedia Freehand. I will try with Illustrator or even, dare I say “flash” to do the eyes. I will post up my practice stuff.

Or talk to kit.

where is the superlooper website?

Google says: http://www.superlooper.de/

attempt one: 8 colors, gif format, all illustrator. As you can see the eyes are still off, mouth missing.

Attempt Two: Updated with moustache and mouth, fixed the eyes somewhat.
What do you think? Pointers, Criticism welcome…

looks good the only pointers i would have is to try and make the nose more defined and the lips although the shape is good the shadows that define the upper and lower lip are missing lastly the ear needs mor detail i am being sort of picky but i figured i would give my honest opinion

Go right to the source.

Superlooper was created by Vectorize. Vectorize wrote a tutorial on how they do their vector art…

allright, here is my little brother’s shot at 3years old. took me about thirty minutes. The eyes and mouth are still my greatest nemesis.
Finally 300 posts.
and

how do the eyes and lips?? i dont have freehand…only photoshop and illustrator

Had a few hours so I threw together this to maybe give you an idea of where to put the shadows on the motuths and stuff its not finished but the eyes and the mouth were what i wanted to show you.

Somebody called?

I’d say that Illustrator is unquestionably your best bet, so you’re OK there. Fireworks is good too, but personally I find Illustrator to be the only program that can do everything that I need it to for this kind of thing.

Eyes are generally not too difficult, but mouths and noses can cause a lot of issues. For mouths, I think the two biggest problems people have are getting the shape right and choosing the right colour. Actually now I think about it, maybe the two are connected. From what I’ve seen (and this is a sweeping generalisation of vector art as a whole), people are very careful to get shading and highlights on skin and hair tones, but mouths are left as more solid blocks of colour. That makes them look flat and wrong… :sure: So by picking a mixture of more realistic colours, you might fix a lot of problems. The shape shouldn’t be too difficult if you’re working from a photo. If in doubt, make small shapes and group them rather than going for one big fill.

VDam, thanks yours looks much better than mine, I think you nailed the mouth perfectly, using only 3-4 colors. I need more practice on that, like kit said it looks flat and tagged on in my illustrations.
Kit, thanks for answering the call, the hardest area for me is creating the eye shape and the lashes, the lid is giving me hell, but I will work on this.
Thanks guys for the tips and submissions.

Small shapes. That’s the way to go I think. Illustrator tends to distort things sometimes when you try for too complicated shapes, so break things like lashes etc down and group them when you’re happy.
