Website design charges

Wassup y’all? I’ve just finished college, and been very fortunate in that some magazine would like me to design/update their website in Flash. They aske me WHAT I WOULD CHARGE!! I HAVEN’T GOT A CLUE!!! Because I am a student just finished, I don’t want too ask for too much. But if someone could give me a rough guide to work out my costs it would be very helpful.

THANX!!

It really all depends on what they want done and how much work it will take. Then after you consider all that, you determine how much of your time you will spend on it, and any costs that you might need for the site (if you purchase their domain name for them, if you purchase their hosting plan, etc)

Basically, its a factor of how much you will NEED for it + plus working charges.

Working charges are determined by how much YOU think your time is worth, if it is going to be a difficult site to put together you can charge more (if it requires CGI, PHP, FLASH, mySQL, and other various scripting on your part), but if its simple, then you can charge less.

I guess what I am trying to say is, it’s up to you, but don’t sell yourself short, first determine what they want, then figure out cost.

I hope this was at least of SOME help (which is probably wasn’t, and if it wasn’t, sorry to waste your time)

Hey,

I’d like to add two things here that are of my own personal opinion about the subject:

  1. It really depends where you live. Because of the various currencies, living expenses, and how much others in your area (or competition if you prefer to look at it that way) charge for the same kind of work.

  2. I’m not sure if you’re planning on getting into this as a career or not… but if you want to keep getting more and more of this kind of work I would submit something just slightly lower than whatever your final number was… and here’s why: It’s an excellent way to build up some client base. A great way to get some word of mouth about yourself around is to provide good services for a good price. Once you have a solid client base and more and more people keep asking for your services, then you can always raise your prices a bit, and that will get you some decent business and profits.

I hope that helps a bit,

Uth
