sounds like i should try FWMX…i have been procrastinating, such good experiences with PS…
mdipi:
they aren’t mutually exclusive…
you can use both…
one is better for some things, one is quicker for others. You should check it out tho. You can design your site, then publish to HTML, all in a few minutes, off of a psd you created in PS, with a few more options, and flexibility…
I think…
Rev
Yeah, that is how I do my layouts.
I create the slices in the .psd file then export the file for web and it will export each of my slices as seperate images and shove them in an html file with all the pieces put together.
I always redo the entire code though because there is a lot of useless code shoved in there (SOMETIMES). It is good for people that don’t really know that much, but if you can make it simpler… then why not?
I still say if you use dreamweaver and not fireworks you are selling yourself short. Round trip editting is the bomb.
I use Dreamweaver and I love it.
But I am a full out coder (self proclaimed).
I like doing CSS, Javascript, DHTML, HTML, etc.

I agree…
for web quick use, use FW…
Rev
rev, yes i knew that i could use both, its just that i love my PS, using something else would be like, cheating on it…ya know?
=)
get over it…

Hey, Rev I’m just getting into using FW’s after it has being laying domant within MX Studio since I decided to get it. I gave it ago and designed a webpage, with rollover buttons and all that, then I exported the html and the image and opened all this up in DW. I’m confused about two things.
How do I make the text boxes that I create in FW dynamic so they are highlightable?
When I open up what I’ve created within DW it is one big image, how do I get all the ‘objects’ that I’ve created to be separate?
Thanks for any help with this.

Marc:
very good questions, all of them…
how did you create the rollovers? did you slice them?
FW will create a page for you, but the code can be extremely difficult to read/modify…
there are several ways to have FW set up a file structure, when I have used it this way, I have it set up an images folder, just as if I were building and writing the page myself. However, I have only used FW for real simple pages, since I enjoy Flash so much more, and am much better versed in it… That being said, I have never used dynamic text fields with FW… It must be possible, you may have to check MM forums on FW… not a lot of FW forums out there… yet…
So… give me some more info, and I will attempt to answer your ?'s…
Rev
I consider myself a fw guru, but I dont understand the question. Did you slice the image up in fw?? because if you did you can elect to put the slices in a separate folder the option is at the bottom of the export screen. As far as dynamic text fields this is fairly simple with asp and css. That is if I am following you correctly. More info and I can help you also.
Sorry I wasn’t clear about my question when I meant ‘separate’.
I only poped my head in this program for an hour. I created my rollover btns by slicing them and dragging the crosshair to the top left and when the behaviour panel pops up I had the behaviour swap image to frame 2 (where I have placed the image I want to appear on rollover). All the images and the, the main background are created in the folder where I directed them so as well as the html page with the js.
What I meant was when I am adding logos and such to the background image how do I have these separately save, on export to a folder heirachy that I want? From thinking about it some more I think that I’ve worked it out. I slice what I want to be saved individually?
As I say I’m very new to FW so I hope I’m not sounding too stupid. Could I have some tips on directing the sliced images a folder heirachy.
Cheers
Edit: (making it sound clearer)
[off topic] 3d, is bunjie going to re-release halo for LIVE?
i hope so:evil:
Soryy for spamming.
But MidiPi
Do you have Xbox Live if so whats your GamerTag.
Because im getting it for christmas.
I think I follow you. When you are in DW and you want to add images to you FW image. You can right click it then pick edit with fireworks this will take you to the original .png file that you started with (be sure to save your original .png) make your changes then press done on the document window (upper right corner) and that will update the html file automatically. If you have allot of changes you can do batch processing. We’ll save that for later.
oh yeah mdipi…it has been discussed but i doubt it.
I’m getting the gist of FW now. So this png, file is like the psd file in photoshop obviously where I can go back and make edits and re-export. Lets say I did export again, wouldn’t this overwrite any hand coding I may of done in DW with the html file?
Back to the the folder and slicing issue. Lets say I create an image folder for btns and their event states and another image folder for other pics I am using, can I send the slices to the appropriate folders? When I’m working in DW and I select an image and click on the yellow FW button does this open up the png file so I can edit a rollover state and then export to update the html?
I’m very interested on understanding this process of the interelation between FW and DW. Be good to hear anymore tips you have on this and how you, as an experienced user, work these two programs together.
Thanks
~Marc
You can designate a folder for the individual slices but when you export it essentially is one image just sliced. You can put the slices in a folder lets say slices (that is what i do) just to make your image folder nicer. BUt no you cannot split in the manner you want nor can you edit just regions. It will open the whole source png. What you can do is set your layers in your png to supprt your constant edit with grouping (this is also what I do). It sounds like you wanna use library items. They are like templates you drag them into dreamweaver as you need them. you can link them or unlink them so you can update all or just some. Look into that also. Let me know if you need to know more.
I’m going to read up on using the library method and get my head around templates for now.
Thanks for the direction.

Just to add my humble opinion to all this, I generally use Flash itself for drawing. Certainly for my usual line art bits and pieces. It just does the job so much better than something like Photoshop or Illustrator.
Otherwise if there’s other things to be done then I use Photoshop to make it and Fireworks to optimise for low file sizes.
