What's this whois malarky?

Im about to register my .com on godaddy.com for the domain and hosting… and they want 9 dollars a year to keep me unlisted in the whois directory. Anyone know what it is and if it’s worth it? Cheers!

hehe, you don’t know what the whois directory is?

I used to do this, but it adds up quickly. I’d only do it if you have lots of enemies, because it is a directory that lists who owns what domains, along with their address and phone number, which can be used against you heh

It’s like having an unlisted phone number.

to keep you UNlisted? i dunno… i just got a bunch of emails last nite telling me that i had to revise my registrar info to make sure it was still valid or they had grounds to delete it… go figure.

Whois is the public information you provide the registrar when getting a domain. This information is searchable by anyone with an internet connection, and directly associates you with teh domain. They are asking you to pay a fee to hide that info. However, I would caution you on that since the info you are providing is absolutely necessary in order for all the registrars to share the database known as “domain names” and their availability. It’s not a false advertisement perse, but either way, you info is going to be made a available no matter what, because that’s the way the law is.

Search any domain name, then do a whois search on it. That info is what you are required to give.

Actually UNFLUX, the info isn’t available. It is basically a proxy. A company’s information appears instead of your own. I used to have it on my www.barbdwyer.com domain, but I didn’t renew it when I renewed my domain… It seemed like a waste of time/money.

cool beans. I wont pay it, I dont think i have any enemies. This could be a handy way to find out if i do! Cheers all. One more thing… i am also going for the economy email package for 9 dollars. Ive only ever got a couple of domains before but ive never done the email seperately. do i need this to use the domain for email too? I never realised i knew so little!

EMail thing? I don’t know what you’re talking about, but I think that that option may be for if you are using a host that doesn’t allow you to have any mailboxes (most do)

apparantly, i get 1 address, 25 meg total storage, free webmail etc etc. https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/email.asp?isc=&se=%2B&from_app=&rhl=nv_web_email_%2Fdefault

all i want is contact@mydomain.com messages to end up in outlook like it always has done before!

what host do you use?

what at the moment? I use ndo.co.uk. Regretably.

Ok, I had a look at their site, and they don’t let you have any e-mail addresses, so you have 2 options (i think), either you can change your host or get this thing through goDaddy.

I’d definitely switch hosts if I were you, because for just $12 a year, you can get full hosting (only $3 more than the single e-mail address) through www.siteflip.com They are awesome, cheap, and have great service

I’ve also heard that UNFLUX hosting is really good =)

cheers for your help! im gonna take your advice and go with siteflip for registration and hosting. All because you said so. So if it all goes wrong, im gonna be straight on whois to track you down! No, really thanks for the advice.

Ooh, one more thing. I gotta register it before i can apply to host it. (figures). Do i wanna forward the domain or park it?

You park it first, then when siteflip sends you the information about the nameservers, you go back and set the DNS\

Good pick on the hosting  I’ve never had any problems with them, I host all of my sites there.

Thanks. Jesus will want you for a sunbeam. Turns out my bloody credit card is the wrong type. I’m not a happy bunny. I’ll have to open a new account, so im sure i’ll be back with more problems when i get it! Thanks again. Humph.
