This is a reprsentative democracy, and it has its roots since the early days of the US founding. If it wasn’t for the electoral system, there would have been no US, for the Constitution would have never been accepeted 200+ years ago.
Also, the electoral system is good because, if it was based only on popularity, both politicians will simply go to the Top 20 urbanized cities and ignore the rest of the country. Neither Kerry/Bush would be focusing on Ohio, Florida, Iowa, etc. It takes effort to travel across the US in a bus/train/plane, and it would be a lot easier for both parties to just stay in CA/NY/MA/TX/etc.
People vote according to popularity of the candidates, both in a representative and a direct democracy.
Just going to the big cities doesn’t ensure a majority of votes.
They’d have to fight for votes everywhere nonetheless.
I found neither an argument against my example in your post nor an argument for representative democracy. (If this can be called democracy at all.)
Correct me if I get something wrong but I interprete your post in a way that basically you are saying that it is ok when the minority of votes determines who becomes president.
I Guess some people learn the hard way. You have no proven points. Have you seen the gas prices here, they are getting worse every week. We are bringing a democracy to a terrorist nation. Lets see, cutting off heads, that’s not terrorism at all. Suicide bombing in Israel killing hundreds of people over months, totally not terrorism. Saddam, totally nice guy, wish he was my neighbor. There are so many terrorist cells in Iraq (And I’m sure Iran) that have no goals besides causing death to others. Sure no WMD were found, doesn’t mean they won’t be found eventually. Are you really ignorant to believe that they will be right out in the open for us to find? By the time we started the war they were surely hidden or transported to another country. Either way, WMD or not we should have taken on Iraq. I have a quite a few family members in the Marines. If my country requested of my service if we needed more soldiers I would go no doubt about that. Just because I support the war doesn’t mean I have to be in it. We have enough soldiers at this point, but if the time comes where we need to be drafted I will go happily. I am a law student, I will not be dropping out and waste the money I’ve already spent to enlist when it isn’t even to a point where I’m needed. Your points are not valid.
Gore had more popular votes, and he is the Blue colored person. Notice that if both candidates focused primarily on the Blue areas, they could easily tilt an election one way or the other…because you have to presume that a good portion of the country will vote one way or the other regardless of whether a candidate visits. Stuff such as Swing states would be nonexistant.
Then there is the US House of Representatives and Senate which are based on population for the house and a fixed number for the senate. In my view, the electoral college is fair. It works most of the time…it’s when it doesn’t work in their favor that a few people get upset!
this will be last reply asi am NOT a politic nut, and i dont have time/desire to watch the new, i get the headlines off the net.
There was terriost attacks before 911! Remeber the bomb in the car that drove into the world trade center? Since nothing that big happened clinton didn’t do anything about (even if something did happen, would he of done something?).
Also, bushes tax cuts DID effect the lower class, my family is in the ‘lower’ class, and we (my dad and mom) got a pretty considerable sum back from the tax cuts, enough to be able to help replace my dads 20+ year old volvo, alot of our friends got alot of help too from the tax cuts.
No terrorists in iraq. Matters what a ‘terrorist’ is? Is a person who blows himself up to kill other person a terrorist? Is a person who cuts a persons head off a terrorist? Is somebody who kills his own brother a terriost?
think about it.
Torture. Now are you comparing nude terrorists in a prison to a civilian not even involved with the war being beheaded?
By the way florian, or should I say firegambler, don’t register another name. You can come back in 24 hours. You register another name you won’t be coming back at all.
[ot]Yeah…registering in another name to post when you already have a username isn’t allowed on the forums. It’s worse when you actually get caught [/ot]
[ot]He can be as upset if he wants. I have been a moderator for four years now. He stepped over the line. I know political debates get heated so that is part to blame. But as a moderator I want respect whether you like it or not. He stretched his ban to 3 days. Now it is I.P. ban so he won’t be registering new names.
Take this hint: Don’t be inflammitory. That goes for you too RB, I know you don’t like me, but hold back from the sarcasm.[/ot]
Oh, so you mean Iraqi people were actually to COME into the United States and start blowing themselves up and chopping american peoples’ heads off? Wow, Bush definitely is worthy of every american’s vote, in that case!
America DID invade Iraq, and what all these Iraqi groups are RESISTANCE groups and not TERROTISTS, regardless of the techniques they use to attack AGAINST THE INVASION. . .
I would love to see those republicans finally admit that Iraq had nothing to do with the “war on terror”. I would love to see those republicans finally admit that Bush made a horrible mistake by invading Iraq (well, he surely had a reason to go into Iraq, but that we’ll know in 30 years). I would love to see those republicans finally admit that Iraqis fighting against GIs are not terrorists (I don’t know. The US has WMDs. Let’s say it’s being attacked by a greater force than the US army - THEORY, don’t give me the “that won’t happen, we’re stronger” crap - Would the people people living in Ohio and Kansas be considered terrorists when all they want to do is liberate their country?).
Anyone thinks Osama Bin Laden is still alive? We haven’t seen him with yesterday’s newspaper for over a year now… So my guess is: he’s either dead or in custody and they’re waiting for the right time to bring him out. If he is, it’s one of Bush’s main asset to win this election, and it’s going to make me puke if Americans fall into that. I hope I’m wrong, we’ll see in less than 2 months now…
You have many valid points brought the the table and I respect that. Most of the Bush supporters are on the fence with their vote, but in the long run no matter the Bush mistakes they would rather him than Kerry. This is the case with me. I am an Independent, but this year I am voting Bush because I think Kerry would do worse. Truthfully I believe if Kerry is elected Clinton will end up with power inside the United Nations and cause a New World Order. The Council of Foreign Relations has been waiting to get complete order, they already have the Federal Reserve. The government is corrupt from either side, they all want the same thing they just play for different teams. In the long run it will eventually happen, but I’d rather not have Kerry in there considering his alliance with Clinton. Truthfully, Pomme will most likely be right. Osama will be used in the elections when the time comes. Then again I have to take in the point that I am sure the public does not and will not ever know half the story on anything. We also have to realize that there are stronger powers than the President working behind the scenes. The United States can be taken over, there are many strong armies out there that could ally againt our forces and win. Well there are still many facts absent to me, but I wish I knew enough to know exactly what’s going on.
I have to go, thanks Pomme for the post, great to see some valid points! :thumb:
Im still Very much undecided. I havent voted in any election before (im 22) but i have more of an interest in my govt’ than i did before =) The problems im facing are, who do i trust. I dont like kerry, even though he does speak well and has some good ideas. I dont like Bush, for the same reason. I feel bush did invade Iraq in the name of Peace and Democracy, and used the WMD as an excuse, which turned out to be non existant and bush kinda went “oops”. hehe I know Sadam is an evil dictator, but i think in order for the Iraq people to successfully change their govt would be a revolution, but then again fear keeps people at bay. Getting back on track… I’ve been looking at Nader, but thru my research and just gut feeling of the guy, im skeptical of him as well. I think the major thing that is keeping me from really deciding is the fact that Bush is very Right wingged, and Kerry is Very Left, and there seems to be a division in this country. Instead of trying to say “Hey , these are the issues, lets fix whats wrong” , they just push their plan and it again it seems too divided. Another problem i have is i dont know what source is reliable. CNN seems Liberal, and Fox News Seems Conservative lol … Maybe im over analyzing it but i try to look at the facts and decide for myself and i end up with no canadate. just thought i’d share. =) (ps. my father is very conservative, and i agree with alot of the republicans ideals, but i just dont like bush… he seems too … shady lol, im kinda leaning Indepentant (sp))
Another little thing i hate is the “Anti-X Canidate” campains…
“Bush Hates babies,… Do you want someone who hates babies to be president? Vote Kerry”
“Kerry has a big nose… Hey mr Kerry, got a Kleenex? Vote bush”
just seems ridiculous! Why do people focus on the Negative instead of the positive? and if nothing else, say something like “We know <x-Canidate>'s Position, here is my view.”
