When i load a cd in the drive it gets read and the box opens which gives the choice of browsing and whatever the other options are, but nothing works from there. I can see the cd in My Computer, it reads the title of the cd but can’t open it, either double clicking or right click and explore. This happens with genuine cd’s as well as my burnt back ups. I have replaced the drive with one that i know works but still nothing…same thing. Can’t reinstall xp or update drivers from the cd coz it wont read em…
sounds like a cdex error. I had this problem not long ago because my direct-x drivers went funny. Try installing a new direct x driver. I would also recomend checking the officail windows website for any driver updates. Failing that just send microsoft help desk an e-mail stating the problem (assuming you are using a legal copy of xp)
how old is you CD drive? If its more than 3-4 years old, you may want to consider getting a new one. If thats the case i reccomend http://www.eclipse-computers.com/ for your uk sales. I have not find anyone else cheaper.
Thanks Orange, i’ll give the drivers a go first, although it’s probably about time to replace it… I did try one from a pc that does work and it did the same thing.
