A friend of mine runs a magazine called mental_floss, and he wanted to get some opinions from me regarding how the site can be improved. The site’s URL is: http://www.mentalfloss.com
I look at the site, and I realize changes should be made. I just don’t know exactly what needs to be changed. There doesn’t seem to be any continuity in the design/content, but there is nothing blatantly wrong either.
I would highly appreciate it if anyone would offer me suggestions on how the design can be improved.
You’re right Kirupa, the site lacks consistency and the content isn’t layed out well. I think he should work on the alignment of his content more, maybe align his text to the left instread of centering them like on the home page. On some sections like the “new issue” section, things are a bit more organized here since he aligned the text with a justification to the left and has the images aligned to the left as well so it seems more cleaner.
I think the best thing for him to do is create a template and use it as a guide to rebuild the other sections so it will reflect the rest of the sections.
I also noticed he had a margin problem as well, not really noticable, but it caught my attention. On the home page, he has a margin around his layout, but if you click on the subcribe section, you’ll notice theres no more margins so the layout shifts.
Last, I noticed he has 2 buttons that shows up when you move your mouse over kinda under the logo banner. I think he should have it stay instead of dissappearing. I didn’t even know they were there till I randomly moved my moust around.
Overall I think it has some minor flaws, but it could of been worse. I hope those comments will help. =)
the first thing 1 mentioned is that theres a lot of content on the first page. simply too much, maybe he could solve that by using different sizes for the text and/or using tables if he wants to continue using html. the 2nd thing i mentioned is that the rollovers produced by javascripts or something like that, don’t know, react quite slow and unatural (cant describe it, it just does not look well).
DISCLAIMER: this is MY opinion, im quite sure others will find advantages about the site or find other things that do not fit, it could be even perfect, but i think its important to give/receive feedback
Thanks, yeah, that could be something that could be worked on. I also feel the header simply takes up too much space. I’ll take all these critiques when I meet the designer soon. I might be asked to volunteer to help modify the site :ub:
hhhmmmm…I think alot of content on the first page for a site such as this is good. Kinda like a newspaper. However for the frontpage I dont think vertical is good. If the content was horizantal the maybe. Still on the first page the divider lines are too thick irratating for some reason. The nav being on the right is kinda odd also. The consistency is kinda questionable also. Also there is different colors used on the fonts. why? Also I spotted a few different font types. a no no. But these are just my Opinion.
