Charging clients

ok a few times now i’ve been asked “what do you charge.” and i have a sketchy idea but i get the feeling that maybe i’m quoting a price that’s too high…

my question for u all is - what do you charge for a site?

“idk, just a basic site. nothing fancy.” (<–cuz that’s the response i get when asked what they want done. lol)

would u come out w/ an hourly wage? total charge?? what?..

thanks in advance.

all these replies were wonderful. thank you very kindly. i think i understand now. or at least have a MUCH clearer idea.

Think this was in a ‘Friends of ED’ book, sums it up for me:
Options for your client. Do you want your website:

  1. Quick
  2. Right
  3. Cheap

Pick any two.

Invariably they want all three…

Where is the option for the client who want to spend all his $$$$$$$ on me for doing nothing?

Its all about self analysis of your skills…you’ve seen whats out there on the web and you can get a farily decent picture of your skils…are you good enough to producs an awesome site?? what about a site that is good but not great??

Once you’ve asessed your skills then look at what others around your skill level charge, and what they can do that you can’t or vice versa then looup how much that particular skill demands.

Once you’ve got a pricing scheme for all what you can do or what you are going to do in your project for the client then decide a) is it better to provide an estimate in money, or b) is it an estimate in hours with the client paying an hourly rate??

If you go with the first and basically say its gonna cost you $XXX then make sure you know what you are doing, that you can stay on budget and that you can deliver within the time frame you have said.

Its an art I’m sure but common sense determines most of it.

Ah yes! The ‘me love you long time’ option (which includes the optional ‘pimp my website’ feature), these would be subject to surchages and are, of course, client dependant.
Right On!

Eat him. :beam:
