How Much Would I Charge For This Website?

As some of you know, I’m currently working on my company-portfolio based website.

I’ve never done a website for anyone before - so I’d like to know some good prices.

Please don’t tell me 50 dollars for a website unless you are insane. Someone paying me 50 dollars for a website will probably get 1/10 of a logo :sure:.

What if someone wanted a site that needed:

  • HTML
  • CSS
  • Flash
  • PS
  • 3DSM (a little of it)
  • After Effects
  • Sound Effects

How much would you charge? For starters I’d say about around anywhere from 5k - 10k depending on the size of the project.

What do you think?

I would go like 5k-8k depending on the client and type of site. I usually go higher if there is a NDA or questionable content involved. Questionable meaning I cannot use it on my portfolio. Give us more info about the company.

How much would you charge to build me a house?

DDD - Thanks for the info. I wouldn’t sell myself short of course.

The only problem is - I don’t know PHP! That’s what’s killing me. Lots of clients need PHP am I right?

Ethan - Please…

There are other technologies. If you have to, figure in the cost of a contractor to do your php. I do this from time to time. Dont think you always have to be a one man army.

Your question was the same as how much to build me a house with a roof some walls and some bathrooms.

How big of a house? What kind of furnishings?

I can’t help you quote the site when I don’t know whow big it is. Or what it will do.

Wow, 5-10 K.
I just sent a quote to a client for a complete Flash Company Site for 2400,and I was being conservative.

Alright thanks DDD.

I guess I can outsource people who do know PHP.

So should I put on my services that I know PHP? I don’t want to get into a mess by that. If the client needs PHP, I think I should just give my brother the job since he’s like a pro at it and give him a little block of the pay.

I should just charge a lot just incase I do get lucky and the client thinks my price is cheap :P. And if not, just take it down little by little.

But by my design, clients will KNOW that I won’t accept 50 dollars :).

Think about it. I’m really young. I don’t pay rent or bills. If I get even 1000 bucks that’ll keep me happy for months :D.

Don’t forget that you aren’t selling yourself (no comments please  ) - what you are selling are your SERVICES. So if you can outsource the stuff you don’t know to people you do know then it’s all legit because it’s all within your company (so to speak) and you have to work out paying your contractors yourself. You just have to make sure your brother (or whomever) understands your deadlines and can be reliable.

:hr:

Hey - once I get the client in contact. How should I start? By asking him/her what he/she needs? And then signing a contract? And then I get working?

  • I’m going to need some help making that contract DDD :P.

Lunatic - Hopefully if the prices are high - my brother will be very jumpy. If it’s a simple code to him like making a news panel or like something with databases, he’ll probably make it within a snap.

But I just gotta trust him. Since we get into fights ALL the time lol.

clears throat Babs did I take your comments wrong or what? I sell my services second to selling myself. Straight coders are merely trained monkeys and the work itself is really a commodity. ALWAYS, ALWAYS sell yourself first and then your services!

What do you guys mean when you say sell myself first and then my services ?

What’s the difference?

Sell your personality. Just like in HS, the guys who get picked first when picking a basketball team aren’t neccessarily the best players. If you were looking to buy a tent and your friend sold tents, where would you go to buy a tent first? Make friends with everyone and they’ll help you down the line, maybe not directly but everyone wants to be friends with the life of the party so that’s your role (don’t be an idiot though) lol. Also, you have to be sincere! Really make an effort to get to know the people around you. Sure you may be smart but no one cares more about themselves then they do.

Depends on the hours… I charge hourly rates… And an hour work is about 15 euro… And most site’s that I worked on took up 100 to 200 hours work. I only mostly keep busy with PHP scripting.

CG - Do you mean like first I should sell what I know?

Aren’t services what you have to offer and what you know ?

T-0, I finish websites too quick or too late. Hourly is a bad way to go. When you want something like some new clothes, charge it flat.

What I meant is - if you don’t know PHP but your brother does then why would you say “I don’t know any PHP” in your portfolio? That will turn away potential clients! Even if you don’t know it yourself you know someone who does so of course you’d say “we can do PHP” in your portfolio.

Isn’t that what makes you more attractive than the next guy? :disco:

:bu:

No Sharif! Be affable and show your clients that you’re more than just a key pressing monkey! Every phone call should start with “Hi Joe-Bob! How’re doing? Did you have a good weekend?..I noticed you’ve been pushing hard with your new ad campaign…” etc… (be energetic) Everyone likes to talk about themselves so ask them open ended questions about their life. Don’t get too personal with your questions though unless you feel that they have something that they want to talk about. Also, it’s not so much about talking as it is about listening and being positive.

Never walk into a room without a smile and always stand up straight, offer your hand and don’t be afraid to touch people. Make everyone around you as comfortable as possible while still letting everyone know that you’re an important person (not because of what you know, but because of how you treat the people around you).

Basically work on your sales skills. When people hear the term ‘salesman’ they think of some pushy A-hole trying to peddle crappy cars. Those are bad salesman because they’re not genuine in what they’re doing and people can spot insincerity 10 miles away. You have a skill, and you can help someone, so do it, but realize that you’re dealing with people and not a computer.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Sorry Babs!

I get exactly what you were saying now and it makes perfect sense. My apologies.

Cheers

Bill

:stuck_out_tongue: No worries BillyBob! :bu:
