Designer's rant

I consider myself a hardworker. I do this not because I have my own agenda, but because of my passion for design. But even passion has its own limit when you’re tired. I often work over the weekend and long hours during the weekdays. But it is very irritating to the fact that no matter how crazy my flying time, my boss just can’t see it. Which to be honest wasn’t my intention anyway. But at least a bit of appreciation wouldn’t hurt.

I worked til 1ish yesterday (on sunday, during mom’s day) and have to be in the office by 9am. So I had to leave home by 8am. Anyway all I wanted is to leave office early today after lunch. All of a sudden we have a firedrill, I had to work on a few stuff, at the end I stayed there and worked til 4pm.

So I told my boss that I had to leave early, and that I’d be in late tomorrow. His reaction was very surprising. Maybe it’s normal for you, but itsn’t for me at all. He said, yea sure if your team (my producers etc) were okay with that, sure why not.

I was like, dood. I worked my ***-off over the weekend and past weekends, long hours during weekends. A nicer words would be very much appreciated. I don’t need my team’s approval at all. I know myself and my limit. My body started to fall apart these days, I just need an extra 3-4 hours break. That’s all I’m asking. I don’t need their approval at all. F-them.

Also another thing is that he didn’t even look at me while talking, that is very irritating. How could I respect someone if that person could not even respect me. One note though, my boss has never worked later than 7pm. Never. Not even a single time.

The thing I learn from this whole situation is that we as a designer need to exercise our rights. So far I’ve always said yes to all stupid requests, but not this time. I’m going to come in after lunch. I need to really get my body rested.

You try way way to hard man. Maybe because I’m a developer… and have a nicer boss. Are you getting the work done? I mean I don’t take my work home with me and theres a reason for it… you will burn yourself out from what it sounds like your doing.

Are you salary? If so I can understand it more as your trying to keep it going. If you work by the hour I would really relax man and stop trying so hard.

Refocus your life separate Work from Home, simple as that.

Good luck man. In no way do I feel your boss is hard on you… he probably is like me and puts work in its own category in life.

Thanks man.

I always have my work done before I take off. Even, I’ve never missed a single deadline. If I have to work overnight that’s what I’m gonna do. It is just furious that he can’t see it. Even if I came in late, I always got the job done.

Yea, in a way I feel quite disappointed after what I have given to the project, and this is what I get.

But yea people have been telling me to seperate work from home. which is a very good advice and I really appreciate it.

He said yes, QQ moar.

The problem in this industry is that if everyone keeps working till late, every day, then there is no incentive for management to hire any other employees. It’s only when people start bringing back their hours to what is normal that the company starts to see that they have a real employee shortage.

It’s all about the cash really, if a company finds itself in the situation where they have to turn down work, you can bet you’ll be getting a couple of new colleagues within a couple of weeks.

You’re not doing the company any favors either by working late, even if it seems like you are in the short run. You’re actually less productive and end up being more expensive for the company.

You don’t owe your company to stay late. If you and the rest of the team have to stay late, do you really think they’re going to let you go because you don’t work the extra hours? I doubt it.
Also think if this is the right company for you to work in if this is expected of you. I’ve found most places like this end up screwing you on a myriad of other things too.

**** working late unless you get either more money or at least some time off to recompense you. I mean if it’s because a deadline is coming up, then of course you have to pull out all the stops. But if it is a regular thing then something is going wrong with the project management at your work, or they just need to hire more people. Tired workers don’t produce as good quality work, and can’t work as fast, so it’s never in a company’s best interest to work their people to death. It seems that often the companies forget this fact!
