::: so eilsoe how is the image going?

eilsoe… nice tire work, I think what you have is great, although you should increase the tread definition is it a bump map or geometry? you could tone down the specularity on the tires somewhat as someone mentioned earlier rubber has little to no specular quality… that is unless your using Armor-All. the shadow mapping you have going is cool, it gives it more realism but you almost loose it in the reflective surface below it. As far as more lighting, that all depends on what look your trying to get, but what I would do if I were you is to change the light color from white to a more warmer tone. no light source is actually white 3200 decrease (incandesent) is a redish orange, and 6500 degrease (daylight) is blue… anyway it looks like you used radiosity to light the scene did you? if so play around with your over all light intesity to reveal more of the darker areas, The last image you posted seems a little flat, more 2 than 3d, make some adjustments to your settings and re-shoot, I’ll bet you will see some dramatic changes…

I put 2 pic’s together in PS, one is the tires, the other is the reverted tires (the reflection), I threw in the shadow manually in PS too.

Yes, the tracks on the tire is a bump map

You had me totally fooled… but that would explain the white edging around the base of the tires… dude you should try to render that scene straight from max, it could look awesome, I didn’t know you sliced it together in PS… which is a cool idea btw… Aaanny who…max should put that scene together nicely… you should render it there and repost

For some erason I can’t get the nice looking shadows I can cook up in PS easily… it’s usually crisp shadows, which I don’t like… is there a way to blur shadows in max? I never tried that…

I don’t use max myself , I use Lightwave but under the light settings should be a tab for your shadows giving you choices of shadow types, raytrace, shadow mapping…etc… a spot light in lightwave gives you the option to shadow map, and in this pop up menu you have settings for map size and softness (fuzziness) if you adjust these settings you should get the effect you want. The larger the setting the softer the map. I can’t tell you what the settings should be, they all depend on the intensity of the light source verses the distance from object verses the cone angle. but if you are using spot lights you should be able to access this feature.
In lightwave spots are the only light type that gives you the shadow adjustment directly from the lighting pannel. Sorry I can’t be more of a max help to you, but that is the way to go in shadowing.

err sorry to interrupt :beam: , but eilsoe whats the best site(s) for 3d studio max tutes? (Im using ver 5)

http://www.onnovanbraam.com/index.php?main=tutorials&group=tire-texture

this is the tut eilsoe followed…

check the first thread here in D&D, it has a full list of sites worth visiting. some for 3dsmax too.

Thanks alot guys!

… im starting this 3d subject at Uni next semester and I need to get a head start  . The funny thing is I can draw anything by hand in 3d quiet well because I did a short course in product design, but ive never computerized it

friction… once you start doing 3d meshes full blast, you will not stop, trust me. It is an entire avenue of art and design, and you soon find out that the applications are limitless. And when perfectionist drive hits you and you try to make all the models as accurate as possible,… go with it …that is the hook, but remember this…" Detail is the key" try to put as much detail in every mesh you make. it’s all in the details.

computer power is the key
