sekasi is right. freedom of speech doesn’t equal freedom to say anything you think of. a straightforward example is slander - you could claim that ‘freedom of speech’ allows you to spread malicious lies about other people, but it ain’t so - slander is an actionable offense…
anyhow maybe this thread is veering slightly off-topic… surely the point is not to define ‘freedom of speech’ in legal terms. I personally feel this forum would benefit from allowing more free exchanges of opinions, even on what might be considered to be ‘controversial’ subjects… on the other hand, such exchanges do require an amount of self-restraint on the participants’ side, and an unfailing respect for strongly differing opinions.
it all comes down to how adult we are, I suppose.

Is this thread not essentially now some sort of political debate on the nature of FOS, and as such, should a moderator not currently involved in the discussion not lock, or close the thread…

This whole thread is pointless. There’s a sister site that’s not officially affiliated with Kirupa.com in any way, shape or form where you can say whatever the hell you want about anything. It’s not as pretty - it doesn’t have the snazzy themes, the social networking features, or any of the other glitz but it IS a free speech zone. You could even threaten to burn down my synogauge and I wouldn’t care (though I guarantee a snappy response). Hell, even a few folks that have been banned from here are still there.
If any of you want an invite, PM me. A good portion of y’all have gotten one at some point, and never post there any ■■■■ way. So, if any of y’all want a forum that’s all the fun of the old ‘Ordered’ forum (politics, religion, socioeconomics, or random nonsense), drop me a line.
This is Kirupa’s site, and his personal property rights should be respected above anything else. If he doesn’t want people getting sore about things completely unrelated to Flash, web development/design, software, hardware, tech, science, etc, that’s his call because we’re in his house, so to speak. I took some time off from Kirupa forums recently…kinda got frustrated with the medium as a whole. The weird thing from my perspective is, I pretty much agree with both sides of the situation. I like what The Canadian had to say about how some peeps wouldn’t dare say face to face what they’re saying online…I also agree with the idea of freedom of speech and that if someone can’t take it, well too bad. And I also agree with the notion that this is somebody’s web site…and they will run this thing the way they want, regardless of what it’s members want. I agree with it all, because they are all valid.
The thing that I don’t agree with is the loss of a good forum member. I don’t think anyone has really considered that. I’m not sure what the purpose of this forum is any more. I understand what the big picture is, or at least I think I do…to provide a flash resource. However Random is exactly that, random. Faster was a good poster, and he seemed to bring a certain amount of excitement, at least for me, to the forums. I’m not sure how many members Kirupa has, or how many of them left, or how many of the one’s that left were deemed ‘valued posters’ or whatever, but I suppose that’s part of the debate here…who decides what?
and I think that’s part of why Faster left. There always seemed to be that struggle. I for one have always appreciated when Faster decided to make a post, good or bad, his posts always seemed genuine, always seemed honest, and at the very least, always seemed to get a reaction from someone. That to me is a good poster, and this forum apparently, just lost him.
again, I’m not sure what the purpose of this forum is anymore. If it’s to post, well, read above.
