Feel the love of Win XP Pro

Hey guys and girls,

Just thought I would share a life changing experience with you I just had. Today I was madly rushing around trying to get a few prototypes together for a client of mine and I thought I would check my “flash detect” script one last time. Of course all my browsers have the plugin and with stat’s saying almost 90% of users have a flash plugin the chance of testing the script was slim to none. So what did I do? Well I installed a small program called “Flash Toggle”, 15kb’s innocent lil thing I thought, says its XP compatible it “should work”. It didnt, it completely died, killing my browser and pretty much rendering it unconscious, I uninstalled it and my browser and went for the full reinstall. And well that didnt work, and for some strange reason I couldnt even download the plugin again so there I was laptop in hand with a flash site ready to show a paying client that I couldnt show her with no option it seemed except for a full OS reinstall…
.Anyway to finish my epic story I stumbled upon a feature in Win XP called SYSTEM RESTORE and managed to restore my computer to the exact state it was 5 hours earlier in 2 minutes! Whats more without losing any documents that I had just saved!!! I mean how cool is that?

Oh and one more thing, all those flashers out there who have this problem
-> flash MX + Win XP + high screen resolution= bad font rendering in tools bars

I found a simple fix.
Go into control panel > display> advanced and change your screens dpi to any other setting, restart windows, then change back to previous, then restart windows again and like magic you will see that the font in flash’s tool bars looks fine!

System restore is a nifty feature for Win XP. It does use plenty of HDD space though, the more “snap shots” it takes. It does a pretty good job of bailing people out of a bad situation.

Cheers!

System restore saved me a few times. It may take up a hefty amount of HDD space, but if you ask me it is worth it if you can spare it

Yep it deffintly saved me…But I cant help noticing that my computer seems to be running a little sluggish after using the system restore…and clues why?

Hmm, i think i need it, stupid explorer keeps crashing. Where can it be found?

system restore? if you have windows xp, go to start—>“help and support” and there’s a link to do the system restore

if you have a virus or something, the system restore may not help…if you try restoring your computer to a previous state and it doesn’t help, here is what i would do.

  1. go to http://housecall.antivirus.com and do a scan (or use mcafee or norton’s if you have them)

  2. go to cnet.com and download the latest version of AdAware and run a full scan of your computer.

  3. after that, reboot, and then go to start–>run and type “msconfig” then click the startup tab up top and and take out anything that looks suspicious (new.net, bargain buddy, gator, etc.)

if it’s still running slowly, let me know. hope this helps

Yeah its cool, although I’ve found that its a bit prone to virus. They’ve been infected a few times on mine, so they’re disabled now.

  • Soul :s:

good point soul…i forgot to mention that

if you think you have a virus, you may want to turn off the system restore (you can turn it back on after you get the virus off)…sometimes the virus “hides” in there because norton’s can’t scan those files or something like that. if you have klez, for instance, you have to turn off system restore to completely remove the virus or you could become reinfected.

OOHH! So virus’s can hide in their darn !! SO how can I scan the system restore or check if viruses are in their? Does just turning it off clear it !? Anyone?

Well you could always locate your system restore files on your computer and scan it with your anti-virus softare or just run a regular check of your entire system to see if you have a virus. That should do it.

Ick, I never use System Restore. I first used it when I was using ME (I know, sad), ever since, I’d rather reformat rather than restore. I hate restoring, the computer gets really laggy after it’s restored.

Speaking of reformatting, is there a way to format XP? It’s different than any other Windows versions.

=)

I had the mistake of using Windows ME for awhile too, friend :hangover:. XP is by far the best operating system I have ever used in my current computer-using life. It’s sleekkk and sexy and fast and just… wow.

Cya :thumb:

Yea, my computer came with ME, I used it for 3 days and went back to 98, then went to 2000, then went back to 98, then went to XP Home, now XP Pro.

=)

Oh my lord, it came with ME? Your computer will be in my prayers tonight. I went from XP to ME to 98 and then back to XP :D.

Cya :stuck_out_tongue:

Mine is a Dell, Dell always equipped ME for like a couple of years. Quite sad.

=)

Ugh. Jesus, I can only imagine the amount of problems that were sent in from buyers of the computers equipped with it. But I do know some people who use ME and have no problems. I, on the other hand, had all the problems in the world wth it. Constant program errors, everytime the computer started AIM would crash. Hell is what it was.

Now with XP my computer finally gets it chance to show it’s true potential! :stuck_out_tongue:

I have a friend that sticks with ME for some reason and refuses to use nething else because he has his all configs right. Idiot.

=)

ahah! after the 5th blue screen of death, it was tiem to switch.

now the best os? OSX.2…fast, sexehr, and even faster. it makes XP feel bulky!

Ick, no Macs for me.
