i keep running into this weird split where a little ambiguity in ui feels charming, and then the second i’m trying to do something specific it turns into friction. some products feel better because they leave room for discovery, but others seem to hide basic actions behind vibes.
maybe i’m just impatient, but i’m starting to think clarity ages better than cleverness. where do you all draw the line between “playful” and “annoying”?
When the UI is “playful” but there’s no stable mental map, it gets old fast. I’m fine with ambiguity in the first-run, “explore me” moments, but core actions should be findable the same way every time, even if you’re stressed or in a hurry. The line for me is: can a new user guess it, and can a returning user do it from muscle memory without re-reading the screen? If the answer is no, it’s not playful anymore; it’s just hiding.
