i keep noticing that a lot of playful ui choices are basically fine in demos and kind of annoying in actual use. a button with a cute label or a vague icon can feel clever, but once i’m trying to get something done i’m suddenly way less amused.
maybe i’m just getting old, but i think clarity earns trust faster than personality does. where do you all draw the line between charming ambiguity and just making people guess?
Playful labels are fine until the user has to commit to something and suddenly wants to know exactly what happens next. On delete, payments, permissions, account changes, all that stuff, cute wording just feels like the UI is messing about.
I’ve seen this in migrations too. If you can’t rewrite the label in plain boring English without changing the meaning, it probably wasn’t helping anyone. I’m fine with a bit of personality in empty states or after the action’s already done, but at the decision point I want the interface to stop being clever and tell me the truth.
