PS image effect

Have a look at the women in red on this website sitting in the chair! How can I take a photograph and create the same effect, i.e. keep the outline of the person, but have the person in one colour?

easy, you can basically use any image editing program like photoshop or any digital illustration program like Illustrator. You would first use the pen tool to trace an outline of the object, change the outline to a selection and fill with whatever color you want.

Personally I would do it in a vector based program so that I can resize it without the image getting pixelated.

Ok thanks electrongeek! So I shouldn’t do it in PS, how about flash or freehand?

Flash or freehand would be perfect because they’re both vector programs.

in flash you could so a trace bitmap. set it to any setting. Then select that frame (which selects all colors). Then select a color from your palette (using like the paint bucket tool). and it will turn all areas that color. presto alakazam your finished

you could use Photoshop as well if you’re handy with the pen tool.
What you can do is set a high zoom, draw the outline of the object/person with the pen tool (and i find the curves handling slightly better in PS than Flash) and then save it to a shape… Or create a new layer and use the fill option in layers options…

I’d trace the photo in either Flash or Illustrator (of course Freehand will also do it, I just don’t tend to think of that) and use either the Pen or Line tools.

Yeah, this is REAL easy to do in Illustrator. I did something similar for a t-shirt design for the company I used to work for, WhisperWire.

We ended up going with a different design I did, but I was happy with both:

The effect you’re talking about:

The shirt we went with:

I’m with this guy. Illustrator all the way.

if you want the one colour effect like bleutuna’s first shirt, i found a really easy method to create the outline instead of drawing all in illustrator.

Well all depends on if you have a image that has good contrast. or is on a layer with a alpha or transparent background. so anyway. If you already have a selection around a image in photoshop and all you want to do is fill it, but want to use illustrator so it can be scalable, you can simply create a path from your selection. and then you can export that path to illustrator , then in illustrator fill the path with a colour!

:: You might think this is a longer way , but really its not, its just another way you can attempt this effect, I must say though , its quite a nifty trick to know. :smirk:

that is a nice design

i like that outline stuff, it looks very modern
