Hi, I hope this is the right forum for this if not apologies in advance.
I see alot written about the Mozilla browser. I guess alot of people on these forums choose to use it. I use IE.
I was wondering what the pros and cons were to switching over?
Why do you all choose to use it over IE? (And please I would like a real answer than just IE sucks, Microsoft sucks Etc. That’s not going to help me decide to move over to it and give it a try :))
Is it better than IE and if so how? Do more designers use it, why?
I’ve heard that there are less security problems on Mozilla than in IE, but I myself have never had a problem with security in IE.
The upgrades are automatic on Mozilla? Is that true? I’m fuzzy on what I actually have heard about this.
I would really appreciate some feedback. I’ve gone to the site to check it out but I would like to know more from people that actually use it because a corporate site can feed you all the BS they want and actual users can give me the truth.
firefox:
-more secure by far, because it’s open source for one
-lots of extension
-tabbed browsing
-skins
-better downloads manager
-pages sometimes parse faster
-better bookmarks
-live bookmarks (for rss stuff)
-more fun to use and support
-much better standards support
ie:
-um… takes lots of ram
-some mean (?) people design for ie…
I’ll edit this when I think of more… but for now I can’t
I use it because I like secure browsers… also, I love the way it looks, and all the little hidden features like keywords (I can type php <functionname> into my URL bar and get taken to the PHP manual page for that function :D).
Tabbed browsing is cool as well… as are the extensions like Adblock (blocks ads, great for 56k users). It’s very easy to get started with writing extensions as well - they’re mainly written in a language called XUL (similiar to HTML) and JavaScript.
About automatic upgrades, I’m not sure… I’ve heard a lot on this as well, but I update mine manually.
I use it mainly because it’s just a bareboned browser that does exactly what a browser should and nothing else. It loads webpages the way they should be loaded (by W3C standards). Anything else that I want, I can add on using the multitude of extensions and themes out there. That lets me have my own fully customized browser, and lets you and every other user have their own fully customized browser. I think that’s just cool.
I’ve heard that there are less security problems on Mozilla than in IE, but I myself have never had a problem with security in IE.
I have never had a problem with it either… well it depends on what you call a problem.
If you use IE over time you will find spyware and backdoors on your system because IE lets them install themselfs without you knowing it.
Also the latest security update, after the SP is with .jpeg
While there are none in use at the moment, it has been show that they can get a buffer over run error just by looking at a .jpeg in quite a few MS programs.
Can you imagine every .jpeg you look at, maybe able to be used to take control of your system.
