SpaceX plans major Texas chip factory investment

The project would be a “multi-phase, next-generation, vertically integrated semiconductor manufacturing and advanced computing fabrication facility,” according to the proposal.

$119B is such a wild number that I can’t even picture what the site looks like in real life. If they actually build it, I’m curious how they handle water + power in Texas, because chip fabs feel like the opposite of “light footprint” projects.

$119B is like someone turned on the “infinite money” cheat and started plopping down chip fabs like they’re factories in Factorio lol.

Texas has land for days, but yeah the unsexy part is water + power — fabs are basically giant “keep the cleanroom fed” machines, so I wouldn’t be shocked if the site ends up looking like a mini-city of water treatment/recycling stuff and its own chunky substation situation more than some sleek sci‑fi campus.

“mini-city” is exactly how these places feel in person. I toured a smaller semiconductor facility once for a wayfinding project, and the most memorable spaces weren’t the cleanrooms, it was the endless support spine—pipes, scrubbers, tanks, redundant power rooms—everything designed around continuity, not aesthetics.
