Web Traffic/Popularity: Abstract or Concrete?

Well, this nice message under the Kirupa banner says I haven’t posted in a few weeks and that I should engage in some sort of discussion. So, I figured I’d ask a question I can’t find the answer to very easily. Forgive me if this is the wrong area, but I’m not sure where to post such a question.

**I want to know: how exactly people start from zero and bring traffic to their site? Is there a list of steps and procedures like SEO to follow, or is it more abstract than that?
**
Many of the posters here are established web designers and entrepreneurs, so what was your method of getting user interaction? Obviously, good content is a good start, but a site can still have great content and still lack traffic. I figured one way is to just be active on web sites, comment on blogs leaving your link in the appropriate areas, joining design galleries, etc, but I’m just not sure.

When I see a site like Kirupa, I know it isn’t the only site out there like it, and yet it still pulls in more traffic than many alternatives when it comes to tech talk. What exactly attracts people to sites in the first place, and what makes them popular?

Anyone else’s input would be really appreciated, thank you :).

As you said, good content is not only a good start, it’s the ONLY viable start.

No matter how well you advertise your site, how you manage SEO in the ends a site with no interesting content will simply die off. However we’re on the interwebz and whatever content you put up, some people will find it interesting. Kirupa has a lot of content in the forums, and quite a lot of diversified tutorials, which I believe is much more important than being ‘well connected’ (I don’t recall kirupa.com being advertised on other sites)

plus we have pictures of grimdeath drunk and semi nakid :stuck_out_tongue:
