Frame rate

Hi,

Just out of curiosity what would people say is the best frame rate for a movie is…Is faster better?

28 is my fav
it’s fast
it loads even faster
it kick’s *** C:-)

I use anything between 26-35, depending what type of stuff im creating.

well… I’ve seen several books mention 24.
I think it has to do with the fact that it’s a whole number ratio of the default setting: 12

why 12? I dont know…

I typically use 24

I’ve been using 30 fps…but on some computers its slow and choppy like it can’t keep up.

I read somewhere that 24 fps was a good number…but I thought I would I ask and see what the general concenus was…

Would 30 fps be choppy on some computers with a slower processer would that be a competent reason.

Anyone else got any FPS they use?

cheers

well… when you make your site, you should consider who your audience is going to be… that’s all I have to say. If you’re going for GENERAL audience, stick to 12… trust me on that. If you’re going for trendy type people who always have decent computers, 24…

… but if you’re going for designers, etc, go for 30…

you have to remember that flash streams… you dont want it playing faster than it downloads… cause to correct that, macromedia opted that it would skip frames so that the time the movie takes is constant.

24 - cuz TV’s got 26 and your eyes are used to that…

If I am using tweens and such, I use 20fps, just for the ease of timing… If it is all AS, then I use 30fps for timing reasons as well.

I personally would not use 12, but would go for faster than 16 (human eye begins to see images as continuous motion at 16fps), but that has no real basis in fact that I have been able to prove…

Just my opinions…

WHOA!

hold on there… although you’re right about a faster frame rate being helpful for making things look natural, you have to remember that the monitor is what really determines it.

I dont know why I said that… midway through that sentence I realized I was wrong, but I’m still going to post it… lol

do you mean the CPU?

almost all CPU’s today can handle 16fps, as long as you don’t use a bunch of MC’s, or a bunch of tweens at the same time… But that has always been an issue with Flash, and always will…

That is what makes a good Flash designer… balance of load on CPU/download/smoothness…

Rev

I’m not talking about the CPU, I’m talking about the refresh rate on the monitor…

but what I realized mid sentence on my last post is that monitors have a much faster refresh rate than tvs… and tv’s 26 fps.

I feel dumb…

the refresh rate of a user’s monitor has very little to do with the smoothness of an animation. The refresh rate has to do with the frequency of the scan lines.

the scan lines are repeated far to quickly on a monitor, for the avg person to see. The fps will make a much bigger difference, since animation begins to look continuous at 16 fps to the human eye.

That is why Looney Tunes is animated at 20 fps… because it looks like continuous motion…

Rev

yeah, believe me… I remembered that mid sentence… but here’s what I dont know…

why is the default frame rate 12? and the recommended one (by most books) 24?

on that one I don’t have a clue…

why is version 6 called MX?

Rev

i think it has to do with the fact that it’s more XML based… or something…

and also because they wanted to make their products into a suite…

I’m just BSing here…

Is it true the ideal frame rate flash movie for:

streaming= 12fps ?
cd rom = 15 fps ?
i read it somewhere…

what about maximum fps for these??(web&cd)

no, thats not correct…

there are a ton of opinons on this tho…

Rev

so …what about suggestion for the movie on cd ROM?
cause i do lot use flash for cd’s…

in theory, CD’s shouldn’t be any diff from online. the only diff is you have to consider download time for the online version, where the CD will have very little lag time due to file search.

that said, it is up to you. I have stated my opinions for fps above…
