I still stand with people are lazy. When I joined this (and many other) forums, it was weeks to months before I even uttered a word. I used the search tool to look for answers and in just about every case, the question has been asked and answered.
Search is one of the basic tools of the internet… people just don’t think to use it. Am I being harsh when I answer a noob’s question with “Go to http://www.google.com. Enter ‘chromeless tutorial.’”
If I ever asked a question it was because I could not find the answer to it myself through the search button or through google.
I search the web for my answer before I ask my question. It saves me time for waiting for an answer, and saves anyone else time of having to answer me when they could be answering some other thread that is more important.

Not only that, but I firmly believe that the knowledge has a better chance of sticking if you had to work for it.

Thats true too.
Like when I learn something new in AS I open up Flash and experiment with it in different ways trying to implement it into different things.
Of course some things go wrong, but thats the point of experimenting… to find out what you can do with this newfound piece of code. By experimenting with it over and over the code gets embedded into your head and you think to use that when the situation arrises.
Humm, all I can say it that my title says it all coughs ultimate n00b coughs  Nothing wrong with calling yourself a newbie since you know you is, and we might aswell inform you to tell you this so you wouldnt get annoyed with out “n00b” questions
Of course you’re right Reni. There are a lot of people who are just plain lazy. I’m not trying to defend that behavior at all. This is how I look at it. If I answer questions for 100 people, 90 of them probebly were just too lazy to bother with the search. 10 of them however are very likely just unable to figure out how to use a search feature well (so they don’t). If I treated the whole lot unfriendly like, just because of the 90 assholes I talked to, then 10 people get screwed for no reason whatsoever… however, if I catter to the 10 people then I have the satisfaction of doing a truely nobel deed. The 90 ***'s are not important. It is not my job to fix these people of their attitudes. If it were, I’d have to spend 24 hours a day 7 days a week doing just that, and I’d still have millions of ***'s that I’d never be able to get too. Plus, those ***'s are not likely to listen to me anyway.
I don’t know… the above looks a little convoluted now that I reread it but I think that my point is there somewhere. To paraphrase one of our founding fathers: “I’d rather a hundred guilty men go free than one innocent man be made to suffer.” That sort of statement rules my existance, and flavors how I deal with people online. I believe very much in it.
Oh I’m not disagreeing with you at all Dave! I find you to be a very kind and helpful soul and I realize I’m a jaded wretch. I think it’s good to help people but for tedious questions - I have been pointing people in the direction of the search button or Google. C:-)
I just want to say, I’m fairly new at Flash, I’ve been playing with it since Flash 4, well the animation part of it anyway, got into the actionscript in 5, and had a couple classes at school with Flash MX actionscripting. I turn to the ‘experts’ here at Kirupa when I run into a scripting problem, and I can’t find a tutorial or a forum post that answers the questions.
Right now, I’m feeling 100% more confident using Flash MX, because of the great help of everyone here at Kirupa. I try to give back to the community by trying to answer the little questions the ‘noobs’ have that I have the ability to answer.
So, I just want to say thanks for putting up with all the stupid questions because your answers to those stupid questions help me learn more. =)
And it only takes one of you to make all of that frustration worth the effort LoungeActx, at least for me. We appreciate your thanks and are glad that you are doing well with the program. Some day you’ll do the same for someone else.
I guess I am kind of a sappy person too. I’ve watched “Pay it forward” three times now and (though I don’t like to admit it) I’ve cried every time. I want in my heart to believe in a system of reward by satisfaction, rather than material gain. I hope that I’ve helped in my own small way to steer Kirupaforum’s in that direction.
Yes, people like loungeActX make it worth the effort to help people. It feels good knowing you helped someone and they actually appreciate it. Living here in Philly that <B>NEVER</B> happens in person.
Oblique ~ sweet footer. I hadn’t seen it yet because I usually visit with the signatures turned off.
really once you know that you’re a noob, to the point where you’ll actively call youself one, you’re no longer a noob… in general.
There you go bashing Philly again! It’s a nice city…trust me…I didn’t find that out until I came to school up here in Hartford. If you wanna see an armpit of a city come here.
