Has anybody used FDISK/MBR?
Does it rewrite the master boot record or just repair it?

Two XP problems in one day! I HATE XP!
stupid XP again
stoopid XP Pro
Maybe you should go back to Windows 2000.
i suggest you get the low level format provided by your HD manufacturer, performing a low level format can render your HD useless so dont use any low level format tool use only the one recomended by the HD manufacturer and yes a low level format leaves your HD as if it was brand new out of the box it completely erases the MBR of the drive
Grim,
Thanks for the input… but none of that worked either. I’ve had a look at the XP compatability list on the MS website and all of my hardware is supported. Have downloaded all the tools from seagate and tried them all, still no luck.
This is really starting to get annoying. Win 95 installs no probs, i can upgrade to 98 no probs, but i can’t get either XP Pro or Win2k Pro to install at all. Both OS’s lock at about the same place, during the Welcome to XP/Win2k screen.
Any other ideas, coz this drive is about to go flying out the window into the Pacific Ocean…
Stoopid XP or Stoopid Seagate - i dunno?
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR - Dave :hangover:
Maybe stoopid Daveman… i dunno
check your bios then you probably have something enabled there thats locking up your pc once you get in the bios try choosing the bios defaults option and boot your computer if it still occurs try removing any hardware in the pci slots or it might actaully be a ram problem its really hard to tell sine i dont have the pc in front of me and cant see what its doing, do you get a blue screen error while booting up the pc?? oh and check the jumper settings on your HD theres a bunch of possibilties but like i said its real hard to tell without having the pc and troubleshoot it
Oh heck - just chuck it and buy a new one!
thats the problem with people especially mac users they dont want to learn they just want to do stuff easily thats why i think pc users ( no offense mac users out there) are smarter because you have to learn more than just to use the OS or whatever program you use, maybe not every computer user wants to be a technician but hey the more you learn the better plus in the end you will be more experienced and you will save money IMHO:beam:
Yes… but I want to spend more time learning rather than fixing. There’s nothing more annoying than your computer freaking out when you’re trying to do Flash or Photoshop - where’s the learning there?

I didn’t know “doing stuff easily” was a problem. I should probably tell my boss to stop giving raises to people who find easier ways of doing things.
I love how Macs somehow got dragged into this. If I sneeze, it would turn into a Mac/PC debacle.
well you see ren, i learned to repair computers because they would charge me 75 bucks everytime i would take my 133mhz pc to have it fixed and most of the time the errors were because it was my fault, sometimes driver problems or some stupid installation error all in all i decided to learn instead of paying so you see lets say he does fix his computer then a month from now he gets another error more money wasted but if he learns how to fix it himself he will have the knowledge and save money, so you see he will learn more than just photoshop or flash which is even better when you put on your resume you will have more experience and an advantage over any other person that just knows flash and photoshop, take my case for example i know computer hardware, programming, flash, html, javascript, photoshop, illustrator, freehand, some 3d apps, networking in all 3 OS so you see if you were to employ someone who just knows design and you lan gets busted or a pc gets messed up how would you save more money paying this employee 12 bucks the hour of paying some technician several hundreds of dollars every time any computer in your company gets busted, i just think it has its advantages to learn how things work.
Ill give you an example i had to make 1 imac out of 2 if they had to pay a technician which there isnt alot of mac technicians out there and most pc technicians get afraid or just overcharge you because its a mac so you see my company saved money and work time and i did it myself in 15 minutes and the secretary was back at work with all her data intact and a better and faster imac
I suggest anyone out there to learn as much as you can dont limit yourself to just one thing or 1 OS learn all you can if you dont know ask for help thats what were here for in the end you will be glad you learned regardles your OS choice

You might have all the time in the world to tinker with your computer but some of us have deadlines. We need photoshop working NOW. If someone wants to learn how to build a computer - that’s cool. I have nothing against that - crack that case open! Dig into your computer’s innards.
Yes, I do have a Mac. Actually it is the first time I am more encouraged to learn about the innerworkings of my computer - because it isn’t broken in the first place and I can take it in stride. Again, since it isn’t broken, I can tweak it here and there… little by little… and learn at a more friendly pace.
Prior to this I had a Frankenstein of a PC that’s partially built by myself and partially built by the resident dorm geek. In my experience, most of the “learning” was picking the right combination of parts rather than learning how to crack into your bios. I have never in my life paid a “certified” tech to fix it because all they do is reformat. In any case, I’m done with that. I just want to USE the computer now.
im not sying i have all the time in the world but im sure he doesnt have a deadline, hes young and i bet you he has plenty of time to tinker with it but like i said the more you learn the better and he has an advantage over some of us hes young and the more he learns now the better prepared hell be when he gets a job doig what he likes if it has to do with computers that is
Again, learning is hindered when you have a broken computer and fixing a computer is not the only way to learn.
I love how you start with closed-minded remarks about Mac users and then you paint yourself as champion of learning. Is knowledge of MacOS also encouraged? Why would anyone want to learn MacOS when you make them out to be stupid because they expect a machine that works?
I need to learn how to use a Mac. Sure, most people out there use PCs, but most people who do the kind of work I like doing use Macs. Besides, there’s no problem in learning how to use both. They’re not mutually exclusive. And Mac users aren’t stupid.
