Tell me 10 things I should do on Mac OS X

I got a hold of a Mac for a few weeks that I can use personally. Show me 10 things that I can do on a Mac (either programs, or tricks, etc) that’ll make me want to switch.

For background info, I got into Linux recently and I’m loving command line tools (e.g. bash, vi, etc). It’s a bit lacking in Windows, so Mac should be better in this sense.

I mainly use a PC for developing (c/c++), web browsing / email, and movie watching (and downloading I suppose). Now make me become a fanboy.

Best of luck! I’m a converted Linux user…keep in mind you can use all three OSes on a Mac

 1. Install Xcode.
 2. Have a two button mouse (I find it nigh on impossible to rely on those bloody one button mice they used to come with).

Outside of that, you really should just use it and enjoy it. There’s no one thing that makes Mac OS X that much better than the Windows world, but it has a lot of small and wonderful touches.

Play with iLife (the pro apps are better but iLife has some pretty cool stuffs).

 1. You can use Photoshop without the annoying grey background.
[]Install TextMate. Win.
[
]Type proper glyphs using the option key: “ and ”, ‘ and ’, and even “…” are good examples. Oh, and proper dashes, too.
According to #10, with a Mac you should go save the President from Terrorists or something.

Double primes. They represent inches.

Command+Option+D is all i have to say. You can also auto hide it based on the app, but it really gets in the way a lot so if you get one of your own you will def want to set that up depending on the app.

[whisper]play some COD2?[/whisper]

That’s it? C’mon guys what’s Mac got that justifies Apple’s constant mockery of Windows? Show me something cool! Doesn’t have to be flash or anything - anything useful, time-saving.

TextMate is the reason I use OS X.

 1. Install QuickSilver, learn to use it before you go and judge it.
 2. Install NewsFire it tells you how many feeds you have unread in the dock.
 3. Install CSSEdit and find out how much other css editors suck.
 4. Install Transmit and use the sync button when updating a site to ftp.
 5. Try draging and dropping something that wouldn’t seem like it would work. Like selected text to the Apple Mail icon.
 6. Use Automator for boring tasks.
 7. Enjoy how everything is intergrated.
 8. Use Apple Mail.
 9. Install growl and have applications update you.
 10. Set up iTunes controls in QuickSilver and have built in media buttons.
 11. Read http://lifehacker.com/software/mac-os-x/

I have a G4 Powerbook with a 400mhz processor and would rather use it then any pc any day. Even with a 400mhz I can listen to iTunes while working in photoshop, browse the web, and edit files in TextMate.

[]Experiment with Automator.
For example:
I have 6 droplets on my desktop for various ftp servers I use frequently.
Various timesaving batch functions in the Finder rightclick menu.
Folder actions on the desktop for automatic file processing.
The possibilities are virtually limitless.
[
]Use spotlight to create search criteria, then save the search.
Select “Save to Sidebar.” in the dialog and give it a descriptive name.
Now create an Automator workflow that writes spotlight comments that match the criteria used in your smart folder.
Save the workflow as a finder plugin. It will now be available as right-click menu option.
You then simply select any file, right-click and choose your plugin. a dialog will appear; enter the comments used for your smart folder.
The files will be tagged with the spotlight comments, and will be grouped together in the smart folder you created.
You can use this to great effect for cataloging photos, music etc… without having to actually create complex folder hierarchies.
ie: you could in theory place every file on your HDD in a single folder, then simply tag the files and allow OSX to organize them for you.
(this is IMO, one place where OSX absolutely trounces WindowsXP; not sure about Vista)

Place the insertion point within a word in any OSX services-aware app, then:
Command-Control-D
Brings up a bubble with the definition of that word.

Command-Shift-4
enables the marquee tool; drag it to select and area; screenshot is created in png format on the desktop.
Command-Shift-4, then Spacebar
Creates a camera icon that takes a screenshot of any window or menu at the cursor.

You can create PDF from any document within the OSX print dialog.

Create dashboard clippings of websites for your Dashboard.

Enable developer mode in Safari advanced preferences.
This gives you a very detailed report of any website.

Dates, phone numbers, addresses and other data is automatically detected in Mail and can be easily added to iCal and Addressbook.

Drag folders and files to the sidebar in Finder windows to create shortcuts.

Use the character palette and keyboard viewer to easily view and apply glyphs and other obscure font attributes.
You’ll find this in the International System prefs.

Add this rss feed to Mail rss section in the sidebar; new OSX Leopard hints will be emailed to you daily.

Since some have mentioned RSS, I’ve gotta say that my favorite RSS aggregator is by far NetNewsWire. It’s wonderful, and as far as I know, the most popular on any platform. I really love it. :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh, and if you have another Mac or Linux machine, check out how easy it is to print between machines. It’s awesome.

I’m interested in this as well. I have a macbook that was temporarily made available to me for Xcode purposes, but so far I haven’t encountered anything yet that made me want to switch from PC to Mac. In fact, I’ve only found annoyances in Mac OS X so far, like being unable to refresh Finder windows (so that I have to wait ~10 minutes for it to finally “detect” my windows computers) and the horribly high mouse acceleration that can’t be turned off.

Install Bootcamp and Install windows have the most beautiful PC thats all you need to do

I’m going to reinstall OSX today my Mac constantly keeps loosing its wireless connection while every other computer, x360 and iphone just work its a problem thats very annoying and Apple just seems to keep ignoring it :fight:

And whatever you do Do not for the love of God use Mail or Entourage as your default email client use Thunderbird

Why do you hate Mail or Entourage? I agree that Entourage sucks, but I have to use it for work. Mail seems like a really good app, a lot better than Thunderbird.

To the OP, I would just sit and use the Mac for the next couple of weeks. When I first got mine I was really hesistant and wasn’t sure if I made the right decision. 2-3 weeks later that feeling went away and I realized that I enjoyed OS X a lot better than Windows.

I dont consider Mail a real email client I mean you need to store your contacts on contacts appt, appointments and meetings on ical, what kinda bullcrap is that not only that but all the plugins you can use with thunderbird make it real sweet.

Like opening websites in Thunderbird without opening your browser and other cool features.

Mail is just one big piece of crap and entourage don’t even get me started I just wish MS would make Outlook instead of Entourage.
