hey
Just thought I’d post this thing up and see what ya’ll thought (it’s in mid-beta). I’m not real fond of it myself, but then it’s hard to be fond of anything you see 10 hours a day for a week. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. (Note I have nothing to do with the content, and I know the nav structure makes no sense
Couple things I noticed right off the bat:
-
Your “lightbox” effect for work you’ve done isn’t really doing it for me. The spinny loading indicator seems very oddly placed, and the dark background that fades in doesn’t cover my whole screen. Aside from that, I don’t think the lightbox effect is a good choice in this case. You’d be better off coming up with a solution that fits into your design better.
-
The km logo generally doesn’t have any good alignment with other elements of the page, so it feels like it’s just floating awkwardly. Play around with it a little to keep it anchored with the rest of the design.
-
People with high resolution can see the content off to the right, even when it’s supposed to have “disappeared”. I would suggest moving it even farther away, or having the alpha fade out as it goes to the side.
-
The way the font size varies on the left-side menu is kind of weird. You should make it uniform.
-
Under “how” the initial large text animation is very very blunt, for lack of a better word. It’s just like BAM BAM BAM, and it doesn’t really fit. You should put some more time into making it smoother. Also, the orange arrow that circles the km logo and follows your mouse becomes disjointed from the box, depending on it’s position - it would look better if it always stayed connected.
-
Most of your text is gray/black, but some of the words are highlighted as orange for emphasis. This makes them really look like links, which can be confusing.
-
I don’t really get the “kumquat martini” thing… It turns my cursor into a hand pointer, making me think it’s clickable, but nothing happens. If it really doesn’t do anything, I’d get rid of it. It doesn’t add anything, and it’s a little confusing.
Sorry for the long list, I’m not trying to be negative, just trying to help. Overall, I think it’s very attractive and clean - I think you’re definitely on the right track, keep it up!
(Also, I don’t really understand the poll on this thread, so I’m just not going to even bother voting)

thanks for the feedback-
aware of the resolution issue- still need to mask out the content for higher resolutions.
the orange words will all eventually be links-
Agreed about the arrow connected thing.
the Kumquat thing will be a popup- weird client stuff.
Just found out that apparently this thing is choking on the client’s macs- anybody here having that problem?
Well I was able to do this (see picture) so that is a problem. Also the navigation is confustion and doesnt seem to work sometimes. The typography kinda had me going for a sec but the site ultimately let me down. I am not feeling the saturation of some of the colors either. Good start tho. The design is a keeper, just maybe fine tune it.

Same thing happened for me as DDD, not as extreme but it broke through simple clicks…
seems most of the problems other people have commented on have been corrected… and personally I kinda like the kumquat martini
I do agree with DDD about the saturation of colors - I’d make that orange just a little more orange. but then I’m guessing your client picked the shade and is intent to stick with it…
all in all really good work.
I love it.
lol. Thanks guys.
I still kind of hate the thing. Decent design, I think, but because of some serious management problems I just didn’t really have the time to bring it all together.

I agree nav was a little hard for me at first only because the main headers–“print, etc. or so close and far right to the actual buttons” You have understand that in English Latin Culture people read left to right so it would make sense to have the header sections"print" at the left of the buttons
and thats all for now…
just because the buttons are faded out doesn’t mean they stop working :D. So yeah i find it anoyig when i point my curser to the left the buttons are still clickable even though im watching a movie etc
