HEy Well here’s the deal. I’m having a computer BUILT for me and for my Graphic needs. I was going to go wtih a Mac, but with the recommendations of some people on this board, I’ve decided to just go with a REALLY REALLY good PC…
I’m having someone built it for me, but I need to know what exactly I’d need IN It…
So, can anyone help me with this!! LOL… I"m so computer retarded. I want to be able to tell him WHAT I WANT, rather than let him choose
For a solid graphics station I’d go with twice the RAM suggested by thorphies/h88… also I’d go with a two Screen setup using a Matrox Parhelia - the Radeon is a great card, but more geared to gaming than anything else.
Also I’d get a different case, something with a water-cooled system, it really helps.
Hey h88,
Phil is correct about the processor. Unless you want the best in performance at any cost, Intel is not the best choice. AMD is really fast and affordable. Granted the newer P4s perform a lot better than AMD, the price difference is not worth it for graphics editing. Only gamers need to worry extensively about the speeds upwards of 3 GHz (the latest P4 speed).
Trinity, for the graphics card, unless you plan on playing games, any card with about 64MB of video ram should be fine. Cards such as the ATI Radeon 9000 are not too shabby for graphics tasks. If you want great gaming, the Radeon 9700 is the best out right now. Also, cards based on nVidia’s GeForce TI4200/4400 are great for many tasks.
It all depends on how much you are willing to plunk down on your system =)
I have a PC (only cause i just bought it recently and cant afford a mac right now)… but Macs are the Best.
Their Graphics Capability completly blow away PC’s by 100x.
OSx is also the most stable OS in the world right now. I mean wow, lots of power and its built on an UNIX base.
But with the stability and awesome graphics, it is the choice many designers.
I mean i’d love to have one. ANd remember, i used to be Pro windows… and if you get a mac, you wont crash as much as you would with windows, in fact i have not seen OSx crash yet. (im sure it does somewhat, which OS doesnt? lol) but GET A MAC! would be so much better than running windows…
I see about as many (or more) threads on MM about Mac crashes, player problems, and “why won’t this work,” as I do for Windows.
The current theme of Windows bashing that Apple is doing through adverts, is rediculous. They are basing their brand new machines against outdated, underpowered Windows machines, by people who are not qualified to give an educated opinion.
I have seen tests at MacWorld that showed that they blew away Windows. Then, at Sygate, a month later, I have seen a different test that showed that the Windows machine smoked the Mac. Both tests involved Adobe Photoshop.
Bottom line is money… Generally speaking, a Mac is a larger investment, and then you still have to replace software (if you have it for Windows), and just getting used to a new OS.
If i had my way, i’d use Linux hands down lol =)
I feel though that Mac hardware is faster than PC’s however yes technology does keep changing and i think that the apple commercials are ridiculas (yet funny) and its all Presuasion.
Im going purely on my expirences, and I have some gripes about MM Products as well…
I think they should co exist (windows and mac) but for my needs, a Mac g4 would be me justice. AND the best part is, it has a UNIX back end, which means i can use the terminal and use a mac just as i would a linux machine or UNIX. Thus the basis of my appeal =)
I love that feature.
Besides, im tired of windows not being as stable as it should be.
I run WinXP and have experienced 1 crash, which was my fault (Running Flash, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, while chatting on AIM and browsing the web is a bad idea…lol).
I love it, but it doesn’t like to cooperate on other systems :-\
As for Mac OSx, I have heard many things about it (and have seen some of them in action). I personally dislike Macs and think all they are good for is Graphics. And well, I highly recommend a Mac for graphics and animation. Macs have the ability to handle them better than windows from my experience. The rendering ability in a MAC is so much faster and better than that of a PC.
I may love my PC, but with the new OSx, I have found myself beginning to want a Mac as well for my graphics.
Macs are still strong in the computer industry, and just as PCs are growing stronger, so are Macs. Macs have come a long way as it is, and the “lightweight” of the Mac OS doesn’t run down as much system resources as the heavweight Windows.
See, as PC systems get stronger, the Windows OS gets bigger and bigger taking up more space on your system and using up much more ram.
Where Macs run on a UNIX base as Ray said, it makes them ligher so their systems can do more with the power it has.
At least I think that is how it goes. I could just be babbling, I am kind of out of it.
Macs were in fact the first PC type created, and Gates actually “stole” their technology and created windows from that.
As rev said in the past… Macs are PCs as well, so they can be upgraded just as well as any Windows PC.
AMD just announced a huge layoff due to lack of sales…
seriously tho,
Macs will never go away, there will always be nostalgic people out there who don’t like Windows, or Unix for that matter, who are used to the way Macs do things… =)
Same reason applies:
ask any MG owner why he still owns a car that breaks down every 500 miles, leaks in the winter, overheats in the summer, and is wired with + ground (earth)… :-\
