Bootcamp: Windows XP + Mac

yeah, i think this has the potential to dilute their cult following, which would really hurt apple.

OMG, how many times does this question have to be answered?

The minute you put Windows XP and Mac OS X beside each other, you will understand.

I think Apple is being smart about this.
If the public want to use a MacIntel with OS X and Windows, then make it happen. Freedom of choice is a nice thing to gloat about.

If it fouls up, then they’ll pay to get it fixed… If not, then it’s a few more customers happy with their payed goods.

I have yet to see the point of getting a MacIntel lappy to go and install Windows on it. I’m trying to quit my gaming adiction…

I think that the MacIntels are precision, quality hardware that is well payed because it is well made, and well built… putting windows in a Mac sounds like droping lime juice on an open wound. Just not right!:look:

This won’t hurt the cult, because the computers are still distributed with Apple, and nobody in the cult, including me, will install Windows.

How could this hurt them? It’ll only help them, as Win fans will come.

yeh, it won’t hurt them, because it will HELP them get more people to buy THEIR machines.

the larger a cult gets, the more difficult it becomes to manage the culture. cult brands are based on association and the brand’s ability to legitimize the member. an important part of the mac cult brand culture is based on an anti-microsoft/windows sentiment. by introducing windows to macs, apple is forcing an association between current mac owners and those that will transition over and run the hated windows.

i’m not entirely certain how it will play out, but i think this is one possibility.

i dont think apple have ever really been “anti-windows” if they were, they wouldn’t of done this.

Its more the users that have benn “anti-windows/microsoft”

I think the majority of cult members will realize the necessity of this, and not charge Apple with betrayal. They will understand why Apple did this, and not be offended.

Well I hope I wasn’t too late to put my input into this… (Oh, and if I have something messed up, I’m sorry. I didnt do any external reading on this.)

Ok, so here we go. To start, this is a beta. Duh. Second off, I think that this is only a small part of what will come in 10.5 or 11; after all, new chips means time for a new OS; they won’t be running Rosetta forever. Ok, so lets focus on the here and now, not the new amazing OS that will blast Vista to peices…
So we basically have a super emulation program if you want to look at it that way. True, it is NOT an emulation, but a seprate boot, however, the mainstay that the program is located IN IS OS X. This means you have to start up OS X.

Now what are the advantages of this you might ask? Well, for one, programmers and developers can test on the same computer, and make better programs. It is impossible for me to stress how much this will help people make better products and get more done, and of course, play more games :pleased:.

Now lets talk about Linux for a few lines… I am almost 100% positive that the final of this program will also support Linux, and even if it doesnt, you can still boot it. Enough said there.

Now lets talk about Windows/Vista. Well bottom line is… Vista is JUST LIKE XP. Same programming language, same stupid DOS shell, same as it has been since they first made the first DOS based OS. Ok, so whats new in Vista? A pile of crap. Oh, and I don’t want a flame war from this. Vista is a cop out on Microsofts end. The only new part is they are fullfilling a few requirements towards it being called a UNIX OS, but it still isn’t there.

Ok, so now the most debatable subject, is this actually profitable? Yes. Hell yes. See, legally, they won’t be selling XP with their macs, so you have to go out and buy it, if you play legal. On top of that, you have to boot on OSX. On top of ALL THAT… OS X is a sweet system, and I think it will help people switch, or, in the very least, choose macs because they support both OS. Also, the stock prices speak for the instant economic ramifications.

The final part of this saga, ERRORS AND DOOM MESSAGES!! Well, here’s the moral of all this. NO SYSTEM WILL EVER BE PERFECT. Get a couple repair and recovery programs, firewalls and antivirus stuff. I have quite a few programs. Another thing… if you are a windows user, or even a mac user, and dont back up your files, YOU ARE A *******. Tech tool pro has this think called E Drive. Wanna know what it does? It periodically backs up your files. So lets say your computer gets jacked, and the OS is totally f’ed up. You can boot via the disk, or boot via the E Drive, which has all of the repair utilities. Its cool.

Enough of my late ranting.

Well done :thumb:

i think of the two as one and the same. clearly mac owners are anti-windows. if anyone’s not convinced of that, please read darkplanets’ post.

@darkplanets: the stock price does not at all speak to the instant economic ramifications. first of all, it’s not instant at all. the system’s in beta and any impact won’t be known for quite some time. the stock price is based on the market’s expectations, not any actual results.

Isn’t going to backfire, that’s the whole point. They don’t care that people don’t use their OS, even though people probably will. The only thing that’s held people away from apple is the OS and how different it is. Now that boundary is nonexistant. Apple has nowhere to go but way way way way up.

I’m sure cost played a large role also

[ot]dark - your views of Vista are a bit outdated. You should research it more, for Vista since 2 years ago is a massive rewrite of the OS, and now having set Vista as my primary development OS on my PCs, a marked improvement in performance over XP on my 1-2 year old hardware.[/ot]

But… it’s still crap next to OS X, and we all know it.

Like others I believe that if you are willing to pay such an amount for an Apple computer you really aren’t probably gonna put XP on there…if only purely for game however otherwise what was the point spending all that cash on the Apple hardware?? and its not even better hardware than what you can get in any conventional PC.

[ot]
I think people will be surprised as to actually how fast Vista runs, and it will go through more optimization before the final release.
[/ot]

and its not even better hardware than what you can get in any conventional PC.

Last time i checked, Dell was fresh out of Quad core 2ghz machines that you could install 16gigs of ram and had 3 pci-express ports.

@bwh2 Apparently I didn’t put enough pro windows comments in. I am NOT a mac zealot so to say, however, I am very dissapointed in how Vistas shpaing up. The whole new coveted OS doesn’t seem that amazing. However, allow me to express my true feelings towards windows.

Do I think mac is better? Yes. Do I hate windows? Most definitley not. Windows is just as important as macs is development and design and they serve as a valuable tool. They also have a more extensive program library, allowing you to enhance and build upon your work. I think both are crucial in the computer world. As I mentioned before, no computer is perfect. I feel that you didn’t read my post clearly enough, because I did list advatages of windows. Oh, and for some clarity. Most mac users DON’T HATE WINDOWS; they only prefer mac. Please, before trying to make me look like a mac zealot, get your facts straight. :look:

[ot]dark - not every Mac user hates Windows, nor do Windows users hate Macs, but you must admit that the one or two of the vocal ones on this site make it very difficult to discuss any Windows/Mac issue. It is almost as if the obligatory Windows/Vista/XP sucks post has to be made in any thread that even mentions MS/Mac by users who largely haven’t used the product or read only what they wanted to read about it (see post #54 for an example).

Your post is clearly an example of what I am describing, or else you wouldn’t have had to mention “Please don’t start a flamewar” in your post! Likewise, if you ever find a Windows user bashing a Mac user on this site, PM me and I’ll take care of it

If you and your peers would spend more time extolling the benefits of OS X without alienating those who choose to use other OS’es, who knows, you might get more converts![/ot]

If you were to have all that in the Apple computer the cost would be huge!! are there other systems out there that can do this?? yes. Are they as exspensive?? no.

When I look at say the Apple iMac and the base model is about £930 and then I look at what desktop PC I can get for that with Windows:

Power PC with Dual-Core CPU
AMD Athlon™ 64 X2-3800+ Dual Core

Genuine Windows® XP Media Center
ASUS nFORCE 4 PCI Expess Mainboard
2048MB DDR 400 Memory

Comaprison to the iMac:

512MB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 1x512MB
160GB Serial ATA drive
Keyboard & Mighty Mouse + Mac OS X
17-inch TFT display
1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor
SuperDrive 8x (DVD+R DL/DVD+RW/CD-RW)
ATI Radeon X1600 - 128MB GDDR3 SDRAM
AirPort Extreme

price: £929

Thats my point, if we were to talk about computers that cost £5000 + I wouldn’t be able to bring an argument because I have no knowledge of that market.

Software wise I couldn’t say whether Windows is better than OSX or vice versa, but I question the quality of the hardware in comparison to similar priced units that use Windows.

you cannot put windows on a mac on mac on a widows the setting are different. e.g. "Mac, when a error or delete alert pops up the system does “OK” “CANCEL” or “MAYBE”

"Windows when a error or delete alert pops up the system does “OK” and “CANCEL”

So there is not point unless you change the motherboard or just get a PC that you want and gonna stay with

I think my details are correct
